RESUMOIntrodução. A epidemia de infecção pelo HIV e AIDS configura-se como um dos maiores desafios de saúde pública no mundo por sua dinamicidade, heterogeneidade e magnitude. A vulnerabilidade de crianças expostas à transmissão vertical durante período gestacional, parto e puerpério evidencia a necessidade de operacionalizar estratégias que assegurem a eficiência dos serviços de prevenção do HIV. Objetivos. Avaliar os fatores associados à transmissão vertical do HIV em pacientes assistidas no Serviço de Assistência Especializada Familiar (SAE) do Hospital Universitário Lauro Wanderley (HULW). Métodos. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico observacional do tipo casocontrole. Foram considerados 27 casos de transmissão vertical, registrados no banco de dados do SAE, e 108 crianças não infectadas e nascidas de mães HIV positivas, selecionadas na proporção de 4:1 por amostragem aleatória simples, compondo estratos de casos e controles, respectivamente. Foi realizado um questionário sobre aspectos sociodemográficos da mãe, acompanhamento pré-natal e parto e dados clínicos e terapêuticos da criança.
