relacionarlas con dimensiones demográficas, socioculturales y económicas, teniendo como universo de estudio la población adulta de 25 años o más. Se utilizaron datos secundarios de la Encuesta de Utilización y Gasto en Servicios de Salud del Ministerio de Salud (2003). Se analizaron aspectos referidos al tiempo transcurrido desde la última consulta, motivo de consulta, padecimiento de enfermedades crónicas y autopercepción del estado de salud, realizándose un análisis trivariado por sexo considerando la edad, el nivel educativo, la cobertura de salud y el nivel de ingreso del hogar. Los resultados obtenidos permiten sostener que estructuralmente la desigualdad refiere las diferencias existentes en el acceso a los recursos en relación con las condiciones de vida de las personas. Asimismo, la edad y el sexo, además de marcar diferencias biológicas en la determinación de los problemas de salud, constituyen mediadores sociales, culturales, políticos y económicos en las experiencias diferenciadas entre individuos pertenecientes a un mismo contexto social.
