A amputação ocorre quando há a necessidade de retirada de alguma parte do corpo, sendo um processo longo que pode impactar diretamente na vida do indivíduo. O psicólogo pode auxiliar nesse processo, prestando acompanhamento e fazendo uso das ferramentas adquiridas na sua formação para auxiliar nos conflitos vivenciados e na minimização do sofrimento. O presente estudo buscou identificar o papel da psicologia no processo de amputação, sob a perspectiva dos pacientes. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa que contou com dez participantes voluntários que passaram pelo processo de amputação e, no momento da pesquisa, participavam de uma instituição particular de reabilitação para amputados da cidade de São Paulo – SP. Para a coleta de dados foram utilizados como instrumentos um roteiro para entrevista semiestruturada e um questionário, ambos elaborados pelas pesquisadoras. Os dados foram analisados segundo a proposta de Análise de Conteúdo, de autoria de Bardin. Alguns participantes relataram terem recebido alguma visita do psicólogo hospitalar durante a internação na sequência da amputação, entretanto nenhum teve um acompanhamento psicológico ou psicoterapêutico. Pode-se inferir que o desinteresse dos participantes em buscarem atendimento psicológico após a amputação seja reflexo da experiência ou a falta de contato desses pacientes com psicólogos hospitalares durante o período de internação.
