The manufacturing sector is vital in the South African economy, especially in international trade. Nonetheless, the covid-19 and fuel price fluctuations have convulsed both global and domestic production and trade. This study analsed how an increase in new cases of covid-19 and fuel price shocks affected motor vehicles export in South Africa. The assessment used monthly time series from March 2020 to March 2022. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and error correction models assisted in determining both long-run and short-run relationships among variables. The results suggested an inverse relationship between new covid-19 cases, fuel prices and motor vehicle exports in both the long and short run. This study recommends introducing new vehicle models that are fuel efficiency, tax and levy reduction on fuel to reduce the effect of the high fuel price of vehicles export. Increasing awareness, precaution and encouraging vaccination could assist in lowering COVID-19 infection.
Background: Globally, purchasing competence within an organisation is key to organisational change and costsavings through the development of product and supplier processes. Purchasing competence enables effective coordination and development of efficient procurement processes that create value for the organisation. Due to limited resources, escalating competition, increasing quality awareness of customers, as well as growing complexity within a supply chain, purchasing professionals worldwide are forced to develop new purchasing competence in order to achieve enhanced purchasing and firm performance.Purpose of study: Within the Sedibeng District Municipalities, progression in procurement is slow, which may be due to a lack of knowledge and capabilities necessary to implement change. Researchers have indicated that most South Africa Municipalities are not performing well in terms of service delivery due to the challenges that they face, mostly emanating from purchasing and supply management functions. Although, corruption is usually considered the main challenge prohibiting service delivery, lack of purchasing skills and knowledge can also contribute to the poor performance of these municipalities. This research study, therefore, seeks to determine the influence of purchasing capabilities on supply-based management and purchasing performance within the Sedibeng District Municipalities.Design/Methodology/Approach: A quantitative approach was used, with 250 questionnaires being distributed to the participants using a convenient sampling technique. Results/Findings: The research findings of this study showed that Sedibeng District Municipalities need to prioritise their staff's purchasing technical skills and emphasised that they should invest in other issues in O OMORUYI L NTSHINGILA Assessing purchasing technical skills as a precondition for effective purchasing management within Sedibeng District Municipality,
The transportation sector is one of the sectors that contribute to the South African economy and its people’s well-being. This sector facilitates goods transportation and people’s mobility through air, water and land transportation. In recent decades passenger transportation journeys experienced a decline and this decline may due to various causes such as cost of transportation, low economic growth, exchange rate volatility, unemployment and petrol price. This study aimed to analyze the effect of petrol price, exchange rate and unemployment rate on on-road passenger journeys. The study applied ARDL and ECM models to data from 2008 to 2021 to examine how the variables above influence long-term and short behaviour in road passenger journeys. Findings revealed that, in the long run, all independent variables influence road passenger journeys. Yet, unemployment has more power over road passenger journeys than exchange rate and petrol price. Short-term dynamics reveal that only the exchange rate and unemployment influence road passenger journeys. The study recommends job creation, exchange rate strengthening and petrol subsidies to increase the number of road passenger journeys in South Africa.
