O objeto que este trabalho se propõe analisar é o debate acerca do retorno do político e de sua dimensão entre Roger Chartier e Pierre Rosanvallon, representante da denominada Escola do Político francesa, que tem em Pierre Rosanvallon e Marcel Gauchet seus principais expoentes. A denominação Escola do Político foi elaborada pelo cientista político brasileiro Christian Edward Cyril Lynch. Objetivamos entender as concepções de indivíduos e suas variações na história cultural e na história do político e com isso visualizar o movimento da historiografia francesa, o mesmo movimento que relegou à história política o caminho das sombras e seu retorno. É pertinente trazer, com as análises, as caracterizações que ambos os autores fazem de seus domínios de atuação. Para tanto, tomamos como fonte as obras de Chartier, Rosanvallon e Gauchet e também René Rémond, bem como as obras de autores que entraram no debate e/ou se constituíram como interlocutores dos autores acima arrolados.
A década de 1870 assinala o momento da chegada ao Brasil das "ideias novas", como destacou Silvio Romero. Entre estas ideias, uma, o darwinismo, logrou grande sucesso entre os pensadores que buscavam fazer do Brasil um país moderno e civilizado. O darwinismo sofreu diversas apropriações e direções discursivas, sendo isto perceptível nas discussões que ocorriam nos jornais e revistas da Corte. Como exemplo dessa ampla difusão do darwinismo, temos o encontro do cientista francês Louis Couty com um fazendeiro de nome Tibiriçá. Dizia Couty (1988, p.98): "Estava eu percorrendo os títulos dos livros que via sobre a mesa de meu anfitrião, [Charles] Darwin, [Herbert] Spencer" e admitia "sem surpresa que os via ali, e que os via trazerem as marcas de uma leitura prolongada". O leitor que abrisse os jornais, como a Gazeta de Notícias ou o Jornal do Commercio, entre as décadas de 1870 e 1880, encontraria várias chamadas para conferências e cursos públicos na Corte que tratavam dos mais diversos assuntos discutidos pela ciência na época, quase todos perpassados pela perspectiva do darwinismo. O homem de letras desse período tinha uma ampla programação de ciência para realizar nos espaços públicos da capital do Império. Decorriam disso discussões e sociabilidades novas, permeadas pelas várias interpretações da teoria de Charles Darwin. Esse assunto é objeto de exame do livro Darwinismo, raça e gênero, escrito por Karoline Carula e publicado pela Editora Unicamp. O livro é resultado de sua pesquisa de doutoramento em história social defendida na Universidade de São Paulo. Atualmente, Carula é professora de história na Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Carula amplia as discussões sobre a ação do darwinismo no último quarto do século XIX, ao espraiar a análise para além de livros de autores que pensavam a realidade brasileira pela perspectiva do darwinismo.
