Although the bone cement had been the gold standard in the field of joint replacement surgery, its use has somewhat decreased because of the advent of press-fit implants which encourages bone in growth. The shortcomings, side effects and toxicity of the bone cement are being addressed recently. More research is needed and continues in the field of nanoparticle additives, enhanced boneecement interface etc.
Background. Dengue viruses (DV) belong to the family Flaviviridae, with four serotypes referred to as DV-1, DV-2, DV-3, and DV-4. A large-scale outbreak of dengue fever occurred in 2012 involving several districts of West Bengal. Objective. To present a comprehensive picture of the dengue fever outbreak in 2012 and to identify the prevailing serotypes. Materials and Methods. Serum samples were collected from suspected dengue fever cases. Samples from fever cases <5 days duration were tested for dengue NS1 antigen employing Pan Bio (Australia) NS1 ELISA kit. Serum samples of ≥5 days fever were tested for dengue-specific IgM by MAC ELISA test kit prepared by the National Institute of Virology Pune, India. Serotyping of dengue samples was done by dengue-specific reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results. The number of dengue cases in 2012 clearly outnumbered the dengue cases in 2010 and 2011. The majority of the cases were in the age group 11-30 years with a male preponderance. Outbreak occurred during the months of Aug.-Nov. indicating increased vector transmission in the monsoon and postmonsoon periods. The prevailing serotypes in this outbreak were Den1, Den3, and Den4.
Hepatitis C virus infects over 15 million patients from India and 2.86 million from Brazil. Detection of anti-hepatitis C virus antibodies has limited sensitivity during acute phase: the pre-seroconversion window period. Hepatitis C virus-RNA detection techniques are used to overcome this shortfall, but are costly and unavailable widely in developing countries. Estimation of hepatitis C virus core-antigen, a protein with highly conserved sequence, by enzyme-immunoassays is an economic and simpler alternative to RNA detection. This study was conducted in Delhi, involving 300 acute and chronic liver disease patients, tested for anti-hepatitis C virus 3rd-generation ELISA, hepatitis C virus core-antigen-ELISA and hepatitis C virus-RNA reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Among the acute patients, hepatitis C virus core-antigen assay could identify 13 out of 14 pre-seroconversion window period cases and 6 out of 8 seroconverted cases, with a pre-seroconversion window period sensitivity of 92.9% and specificity of 100%. In hepatitis C virus core-antigen-positive cases, the viral load was in the range of 4900 to 1.46×10(6)IU/mL, whereas in hepatitis C virus core-antigen-negative cases, the range of viral load was 100-4500IU/mL. The cost of the hepatitis C virus core-antigen-ELISA was estimated around 3-4 times lesser than the in-house reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and 9-10 times lesser than the United States Food and Drug Administration approved reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. With a good sensitivity and specificity in the acute phase of infection, hepatitis C virus core-antigen-ELISA can thus be a useful alternative in the developing nations.
Dengue is an important arboviral disease of tropical and subtropical regions, with significant morbidity and mortality. Dengue virus is antigenically classified into four serotypes, which are further classified into 4-5 genotypes based on their genetic diversity. Since genotypes vary in their virulence, their detection and analysis of spatial and temporal transition are essential. We utilized sequence information from the E-NS1 gene region for molecular and phylogenetic characterization of dengue viruses isolated from dengue patients between 2007 and 2009. All four serotypes and multiple genotypes were detected, with predominance and emergence of DENV-1 genotype V. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the emergence of DENV-1 genotype V from India for the first time, which has replaced the earlier circulating genotype III and genotype I. The circulation of multiple genotypes and genotype replacement is critical, since genotypes vary in their virulence, and this should be a point of concern for healthcare agencies.
Classifying and counting vehicles in road traffic has numerous applications in the transportation engineering domain. However, the wide variety of vehicles (two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, buses, trucks etc.) plying on roads of developing regions without any lane discipline, makes vehicle classification and counting a hard problem to automate. In this paper, we use state of the art Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based object detection models and train them for multiple vehicle classes using data from Delhi roads. We get upto 75% MAP on an 80-20 train-test split using 5562 video frames from four different locations. As robust network connectivity is scarce in developing regions for continuous video transmissions from the road to cloud servers, we also evaluate the latency, energy and hardware cost of embedded implementations of our CNN model based inferences. * These authors have equal contributions.
