Unlike a traditional virtual machine (VM), a container is an emerging lightweight virtualization technology that operates at the operating system level to encapsulate a task and its library dependencies for execution. The Container as a Service (CaaS) strategy is gaining in popularity and is likely to become a prominent type of cloud service model. Placing container instances on virtual machine instances is a classical scheduling problem. Previous research has focused separately on either virtual machine placement on physical machines (PMs) or container, or only tasks without containerization, placement on virtual machines. However, this approach leads to underutilized or overutilized PMs as well as underutilized or overutilized VMs. Thus, there is a growing research interest in developing a container placement algorithm that considers the utilization of both instantiated VMs and used PMs simultaneously. The goal of this study is to improve resource utilization, in terms of number of CPU cores and memory size for both VMs and PMs, and to minimize the number of instantiated VMs and active PMs in a cloud environment. The proposed placement architecture employs scheduling heuristics, namely, Best Fit (BF) and Max Fit (MF), based on a fitness function that simultaneously evaluates the remaining resource waste of both PMs and VMs. In addition, another meta-heuristic placement algorithm is proposed that uses Ant Colony Optimization based on Best Fit (ACO-BF) with the proposed fitness function. Experimental results show that the proposed ACO-BF placement algorithm outperforms the BF and MF heuristics and maintains significant improvement of the resource utilization of both VMs and PMs.
This research presents an improved mobile inverted pendulum robot called Two-wheeled Self-balancing robot (TWSBR) using a Proportional-Derivative Proportional-Integral (PD-PI) robust control design based on 32-bit microcontroller in a sensed environment (SE). The robot keeps itself balance with two wheels and a PD-PI controller based on the Kalman filter algorithm during the navigation process and is able to stabilize while avoiding acute and dynamic obstacles in the sensed environment. The Proportional (P) control is used to implement turn control for obstacle avoidance in SE with ultrasonic waves. Finally, in a SE, the robot can communicate with any of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices (mobile phone or Personal Computer) which have a Java-based transmission application installed and through Bluetooth technology connectivity for wireless control. The simulation results prove the efficiency of the proposed PD-PI controller in path planning, and balancing challenges of the TWSBR under several environmental disturbances. This shows an improved control system as compared to the existing improved Adaptive Fuzzy Controller.
In recent years, with the continuous evolvement in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), including Internet-of-Things (IoT) and cloud computing (CC), computers are anticipated to replace human beings in almost all fields of life. Smartphones and other handheld devices have evolved from simple communication devices to personal computers. They have gained popularity due to their convenient use in everyday life for accessing various online services, social networks, and e-banking, etc. People use smartphones for not only personal use but also take advantage of these devices in their business-related tasks. Consequently, increasing amounts of private and sensitive information are being generated and stored in our
Hyperspectral image analysis often requires selecting the most informative bands instead of processing the whole data without losing the key information. Existing band reduction (BR) methods have the capability to reveal the nonlinear properties exhibited in the data but at the expense of loosing its original representation. To cope with the said issue, an unsupervised non-linear segmented and non-segmented stacked denoising autoencoder (UDAE) based BR method is proposed. Our aim is to find an optimal mapping and construct a lowerdimensional space that has a similar structure to the original data with least reconstruction error. The proposed method first confronts the original hyperspectral data into smaller regions in spatial domain and then each region is processed by UDAE individually. This results in reduced complexity and improved efficiency of BR for both semi-supervised and unsupervised tasks, i.e. classification and clustering. Our experiments on publicly available hyperspectral datasets with various types of classifiers demonstrate the effectiveness of UDAE method which equates favorably with other state-of-the-art dimensionality reduction and BR methods.
The prevalence of smart devices in our day-to-day activities increases the potential threat to our secret information. To counter these threats like unauthorized access and misuse of phones, only authorized users should be able to access the device. Authentication mechanism provide a secure way to safeguard the physical resources as well the information that is processed. Text-based passwords are the most common technique used for the authentication of devices, however, they are vulnerable to a certain type of attacks such as brute force, smudge and shoulder surfing attacks. Graphical Passwords (GPs) were introduced as an alternative for the conventional text-based authentication to overcome the potential threats. GPs use pictures and have been implemented in smart devices and workstations. Psychological studies reveal that humans can recognize images much easier and quicker than numeric and alphanumeric passwords, which become the basis for creating GPs. In this paper a novel Fractal-Based Authentication Technique (FBAT) has been proposed by implementing a Sierpinski triangle. In the FBAT scheme, the probability of password guessing is low making system resilient against abovementioned threats. Increasing fractal level makes the system stronger and provides security against attacks like shoulder surfing.
