Seed dispersal is both a spatial and a temporal phenomenon, although most studies focus on spatial aspects. Seed initiation on the maternal plant may occur over a considerable period, especially in indeterminately flowering species, and thus seeds may be exposed to a wide range of environmental conditions during their development. The result is variation in the timing of seed development, the anatomy of structures related to the dispersal process, and the behaviour and fate of seeds post-dispersal. A key resource during the growth and development of summer-maturing species in most areas, and one that is thus likely to modify these processes, is water. Two experiments were therefore undertaken to describe (i) the development of Raphanus raphanistrum fruits and the timing of fruit dispersal, and (ii) the effects of water availability on the timing of fruit dispersal. Fewer seeds were produced and subsequently dispersed by later emerging plants. The duration of fruit dispersal became shorter when the plants emerged progressively later than the crop, and the time of maximum dispersal was later. For cohorts of fruits initiated at the same time, those that developed under mild and severe water deficit reached their final length sooner, and were dispersed sooner, than those receiving a plentiful supply of water. Thus, the phenology of the maternal plant and the nature of its environment can modify the timing of propagule maturity and consequently dispersal. Such information may provide an opportunity for managers to reduce weed seed return to their field or, conversely, to regulate the amount of contaminated grain or reduce dispersal to other locations.

The effects of ultrasound‐assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave‐assisted extraction (MAE) methods on molecular and physicochemical characteristics of the resultant gelatin were examined. Before extraction procedure, we investigated the optimum pH for swelling of Common carp by‐products, which is an important pretreatment for gelatin production. The highest swelling yield was achieved at pH 13 among pH 1–14 with unit intervals. Results indicated that the UAE gelatin has a higher gel strength, viscosity, melting point, and gelling point. The power and time of sonication showed a reverse relation with these characteristics. In addition, as the time of microwave heating was raised, the gel strength, viscosity, melting point, and gelling point were decreased. The FT‐IR spectra showed similar peaks but the Amide B in UAE gelatin slightly vanished. The electrophoretic pattern also revealed the higher gel strength and viscosity of UAE gelatin due to the higher intensity of α and β chains compared to MAE gelatin. It can be concluded from all of the results of this study that the produced gelatin using these procedures can be a good source of gelatin in food and drug industries.

A large proportion of dispersing propagules land near their maternal plant, even in species that have evolved structures which enhance dispersal. For these propagules, their post-dispersal spatial pattern is likely to reflect the overall shape and scale of the parental plant canopy and, especially in poorly dispersing species, aggregation of propagules on the plant prior to dispersal. Localised patterns within seed shadows are also likely to be affected by secondary movement after dispersal, leading to either more or less small-scale aggregation, depending on the mechanism. Our general aim was to study the small-scale spatial structure within patterns of seed dispersal of Raphanus raphanistrum L. to generate hypotheses about the sequence of processes and events leading to the spatial pattern of dispersal in this species. More specifically, we determined the sizes of small-scale structures within the seed shadows on the ground after dispersal and the extent to which these match the sizes of pre-dispersal aggregations within the parental canopy. Variation in plant size and shape was provided by four levels of inter-specific competition resulting from differing wheat crop densities. Positions of propagules were determined using a three-dimensional digitizer, and the data for each plant were analysed using point pattern analysis. Not surprisingly, larger plants, growing at lower plant density, had larger seed shadows, showing an overall influence of maternal plant size. The pattern of propagules exhibited significant small-scale aggregates, with similar sizes on the plant and on the ground. There was no evidence that aggregation size was greater on the ground or increased with time, but the strength of the aggregation increased with length of time on the ground.

Natural compounds are proper tools for inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. Hence, the search for these ligands of overexpressed receptors in breast cancer has been a competitive challenge recently and opens new avenues for drug discovery. In this research, we have investigated molecular interactions between natural products and overexpressed receptors in breast cancer using molecular docking and dynamic simulation approaches followed by extraction of the best ligand from Citrus limetta and developing for nanoscale encapsulation composed of soy lecithin using a sonicator machine. The encapsulation process was confirmed by DLS and TEM analyses. Anticancer activity was also examined using MTT method. Among the investigated natural compounds, hesperidin was found to bind to specific targets with stronger binding energy. The molecular dynamics results indicated that the hesperidin-MCL-1 complex is very stable at 310.15 K for 200 ns. The RP-HPLC analysis revealed that the purity of extracted hesperidin was 98.8% with a yield of 1.72%. The results of DLS and TEM showed a strong interaction between hesperidin and lecithin with an entrapped efficiency of 92.02 ± 1.08%. Finally, the cytotoxicity effect of hesperidin was increased against the MDA-MB-231 cell line with an IC50 value of 62.93 μg/mL after encapsulation, whereas no significant effect against the MCF10A cell line. We showed for the first time that hesperidin is a flexible and strong ligand for the MCL-1 receptor. Also, it has the in vitro ability to kill the MDA-MB-231 cell lines without having a significant effect on the MCF10A cell lines. Therefore, hesperidin could be used as a food ingredient to generate functional foods.

Raphanus raphanistrum L. is an important agricultural weed that often matures at a time of year when water availability is decreasing rapidly. We examined the development of the abscission zone under contrasting soil water treatments and exogenous application of Ethrel. Morphometric analyses of cell traits were used to quantify the effects. Although the abscission zone was visible in sections after 2 weeks under all water regimes, it was more distinctive for pods that had developed under water deficit and Ethrel application. Pod separation began on the outside and gradually extended through the inner cells until the pod was supported only by the xylem elements. The rate of weakening of the cells accelerated where pods developed under water deficit (both mild and severe) or were treated by Ethrel. Water deficit increased the sizes of cells in and adjacent to the abscission zone, doubling their cross-sectional area from well watered to severe water deficit. Ethrel, but not water deficit, significantly increased the thickness and the number of cells across the separation layer. Abscission scar diameter increased by ~50% with increasing water deficit. Notably, we observed some plants in which no abscission zone formed.
