Background:Knowledge about assisted reproductive techniques (ART) and its procedures affect the attitude of infertile people. Making decisions about the use of ART is affected by one's perception and attitude. Objective:The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the attitude of infertile couples toward applying ART, and to investigate its related factors. Materials and Methods:A randomized cross-sectional study was conducted on 184 infertile couples who had referred to the Research and Clinical Center of Infertility, Yazd, Iran for diagnosis and treatment in June 2014. The data was collected using a two-part questionnaire containing demographic and attitudinal statements. For data analysis, SPSS statistical software and statistical tests of mean differences (t-test), Pearson correlation and analysis of variance were used.Results:A significant relationship between spouse's attitude (p<0.01), relative's attitude (p<0.01), the applied knowledge of ART (p<0.01), and attitude of infertile couples toward applying the ART was observed; however, there was not any significant relationship between gender and socioeconomic status toward applying ART (p>0.05). Conclusion:In conclusion, making a decision and accepting ART can be influenced by couple's attitude, their family's attitude and applied knowledge of ART.
Background:This study aims to assess the impact that physiotherapy (PT) has on the quality of life (QoL) of patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of PT on physical and mental aspects of patients’ QoL.Materials and Methods:The study population consisted of 50 patients who aged between 60 and 70 years and who had previously undergone CABG surgery. The patients were randomly allocated to two groups: a PT group (n = 25) and a control group (n = 25). The physical characteristics of the participants were recorded at the outset of the study. The patients who were allocated to the PT group completed 16 sessions of classic PT. QoL assessments of all participants were performed before and after the program in the form of a short form-36 health survey. An independent sample t-test and an ANCOVA were performed for the purpose of statistical analyses.Results:The QoL scores of the patients (mean age = 62.08 years) who underwent PT significantly improved after the intervention (P < 0.001). A significant difference between groups was observed (P < 0.001) in both the mental component summary and physical component summary variables.Conclusion:PT can help relieve pain, reduce depression, help patients more effectively perform the tasks of everyday living, and help ease the symptoms of other disabilities associated with cardiac surgery. In the current study, the implementation of a PT program improved the patient's mental health and increased their QoL.
Background: Studies indicated higher rate of vitamin D deficiency in Iranian children and also its potential role in both pathogenesis and management of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), so we aimed to evaluate the impact of vitamin D supplement therapy on glycemic control and level of Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) in children with T1DM. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 30 children with T1DM and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels lower than 29 ng/ml were enrolled. In addition to insulin therapy, the patients underwent treatment with 50,000 units of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) once a week for a period of 12 weeks. Mean of serum vitamin D, IGF-1 and hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), before and after treatment were compared. Results: Serum vitamin D increased significantly after 12 weeks treatment (P<0.001). Mean level of IGF-1 and HbA1c increased and decreased significantly after treatment with vitamin D supplement, respectively (P=0.01 and 0.04). There was a significant negative correlation between HbA1c and IGF-1 (r= -0.69, P<0.001) and 25(OH) D (r= -0.40, P=0.05), 12 weeks after treatment with Vitamin D3 supplement. Conclusion: Our results indicated that vitamin D treatment enhance level IGF-1 which was accompanied by decreased levels of HbA1c in patients with T1DM. So, developing a proper vitamin D treatment guideline specified in T1DM patients would result in better glycemic control and proper prevention of its related microvascular and macrovascular complication. The halophilic microorganisms living in extreme environments contain high concentrations of carotenoids with notable medical abilities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anticancer effect of carotenoids extracted from native Iranian halophilic microorganisms with the ability to inhibit breast cancer cell line. To begin the study, 40 halophilic strains were cultured, and 8 strains capable of producing pigmented colonies were chosen from those cultured strains. In the next step, from among 8 strains using MTT assay, 1 capable of reducing cell viability of the breast cancer MCF-7 cell line was chosen as a selective strain. The principal carotenoid was characterized using UV-visible, FT-IR spectroscopic, and LC-MASS analyses. Using real time PCR technique, the expression of genes specific for apoptosis, in the presence or absence of carotenoid, was examined. Among all strains, carotenoid extracted from strain A15 had the most potent cytotoxic effect on breast cancer cell line (IC 50 = 0.0645 mg/mL). 16S rRNA gene analysis showed that strain A15 had similarity with Haloarcula hispanica for about 99.5%. According to the analysis results, it could be estimated that the principal carotenoid extracted form Haloarcula sp. A15 was similar to bacterioruberin. Both early and late apoptosis were increased significantly about 10% and 39%, respectively, due to upregulation of CASP3, CASP8, BAX genes expression in MCF-7 cell line. In contrast, the expression of genes MKI67, SOX2 were significantly downregulated in treated MCF-7 cell line. The results of this study showed that Halophilic archaeon strain could be a good candidate for the production of high added-value bacterioruberin due to its possible anticancer properties.
