Purpose To achieve proper waste management, the disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) is one suitable method. Most developing countries, including Malaysia, are facing lack of e-waste recycling facilities and low household participation. Using a survey method using a questionnaire, this study aims to examine the intention of Malaysian households to drop-off their mobile phones to the nearest collection boxes (n = 600). Design/methodology/approach This study expanded the theory of planned behavior by adding environmental awareness and knowledge. In addition, the cost of disposal and the convenience of the available disposal infrastructure were measured as two parts of the perceived behavioral control. Findings The results of this study show that environmental knowledge and awareness have a significant impact on attitudes toward recycling intention of the households. In addition, it was also found that the attitude and cost of disposal infrastructure is positively related to household intention. Originality/value These results show that if e-waste collection boxes are provided to the nearest community and e-waste management information is distributed, this will increase household participation in e-waste management.
The paper aims to examine the association between information and communication technology (ICT), economic growth and population health based on health production model in Malaysia. This theoretical health production function is represented as follows: where the output is an individual health outcome, and the inputs are determinants of health, such as income, education, health care costs, medical facilities, the environment, and lifestyle. The development of information and communication technologies are represented as of mobile cellular subscriptions (per 100) and fixed telephone subscriptions (100) using time series data from 1993-2017 from the World Bank database. Using the bound testing technique of cointegration, this study finds that ICT affects population health significantly and positively in the long-and short-run. This is because ICT inclusion improves human health and longevity. Whereas, economic growth has no significant impact on the population"s health both in the short-and long-run. The findings indicate that a weak global economy affects Malaysia"s economic growth and reduces the health expenditure per capita. The results of this study suggest that policymakers must develop policies that improves public health by increasing health literacy, disseminating health information and facilitating medical facilities. This study also suggests that health care systems should to concentrate on digital inclusion.
This study examines the effect of mobile banking on performance of Islamic Microfinance Institutions (IMFIs) in Bangladesh which includes their efficiency and internal operations, staff productivity, communication, breadth and depth of outreach, financial sustainability and portfolio quality. A questionnaire survey method was used for collecting the relevant data (n=200) from the selected sample representing the study population. The findings of this study reveals that Mobile Banking (MB) has a significant and positive effect on the performance of Islamic Microfinance Institutions (IMFIs) in Bangladesh, and it is perceived from the results that MB could significantly improve the performance of IMFIs by increasing the efficiency, staff productivity, communication, outreach and financial sustainability except portfolio quality.
Annuities are being treated as a backup financial strategy throughout the age of retirement and a way of reducing the long-term risk of a person’s old age. Takaful markets in Malaysia have wanted to advance an annuity plan backed by Islamic Shari’ah and similar to the purpose pursued by an insurance company, but failed to do so after initiation in early 1999. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship among consumers’ decision to take Takaful retirement annuity plan and their perceived value, knowledge mediated by attitude. Quantitative research has been conducted by a structured questionnaire survey on participants’ attitude, perceived value and knowledge of Takaful retirement annuity plan. The sample (n=121) for this study consisted of the employees working in different functional units of the International Islamic University Malaysia located in the metropolitan capital (Kuala Lumpur and Selangor) area of Malaysia. The findings from this study unveiled that the attitude and perceived value of the participants had a significant positive relationship with their decisions to take Takaful retirement annuity plan. But no direct connection has been found between knowledge and choices on Takaful retirement annuity plan. The significant practical implication of this study will be the Takaful operators, their customers, and researchers.
This study has taken the initiative for identifying the underlying factors that would facilitate Islamic banks in satisfying their customers better. The objective was to investigate the effects of SERVQUAL model on customer satisfaction among the Islamic banks in Bangladesh. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 211 customers of five major Islamic banks in Bangladesh using convenience sampling technique. The collected data were later analyzed through exploratory factor analysis. Structural equation modelling technique was performed to verify the model of the study and testing the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that reliability, tangibility and responsiveness were significant factors for customer satisfaction whereas assurance and empathy were found insignificant . This research opens the door for future researchers to contribute to this area of research through employing a larger sample and extending the current model through the incorporation of new variables. The study will be a meaningful addition to the literature of service quality and customer satisfaction, particularly in the setting of Islamic banks in Bangladesh.
