This quasi-experimental study examined a guided learning approach towards the use of mobile devices and investigated the performance of language learners who were guided in the usage. A total of 419 students from two faculties were invited to participate in this 8-week intervention, 155 participants in the control group and 264 in the experimental group. In the experimental group, the researchers incorporated guided activities Module Intervention Model (MIM) using mobile devices into the ESL lessons whereas the control group lessons were without guided activities. Participants from both groups were asked to record their daily mobile device use for activities related to English language learning using an online form. These data were compared to the results of the tests conducted pre-and post-treatment. At the end of the study, students who received guided language activities utilizing the mobile devices had significantly higher levels of language performance than control group students. However, treatment group students who spent more time using mobile devices to learn the language did not display better performance compared to those who spent minimal time. This finding re-established the importance of guided activities as intervention to facilitate students' learning and points to the need for curricular modernization and faculty development in the instructional use of technology. Due to the increased need for online instruction precipitated by "social distancing and isolation' required to overcome the coronavirus pandemic, the need for faculty to acquire skills in guided use of mobile devices for school-related learning is anticipated to be greater than ever.
The aim of this study is to look into the influence of Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) and audio-lingual teaching approaches on Malaysia tertiary level non-native Mandarin learners' learning outcomes in the teaching of Mandarin as a global language. A quasi-experimental study was carried out on 43 Universiti Malaysia Kelantan students, where they were divided into two groups. Group A contained 21 students, while Group B had 22 students. The study prime motive was to identify factors that encourage learners to be motivated to continue to learn Mandarin. Campbell and Storch (2011) guiding questionnaire was adapted through the interview sessions among 11 Mandarin level two learners of different grades at one of the universities in Kelantan. The learners were interviewed in person in Bahasa Malaysia. The interview sessions were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim and translated into English. The inquiry revealed that non-native Mandarin learners were motivated to continue to learn Mandarin due to the importance of Mandarin in the aspect of employability, self-interest and improving Mandarin grade. The study gives insight to teachers to plan their teaching to match with the learners' demands that are related to their future career building, hence the learning must consider real life situation. It is also recommended that having interesting and interactive learning activities are encouraged to boost learners' learning motivation.
Aims: This study evaluates teachers' perspectives on the integration of guided mobile learning through the Mobile Intervention Module (MIM) in English language teaching. As previous studies suggested that there are conflicting views among scholars with regards to mobile usage in classroom learning, this paper attempts to address scholars' concerns by suggesting English language teachers' opinions on the possibility of having practical guided mobile learning activities to complement the course contents. Study Design: This study adopts a qualitative approach. Place and Duration of Study: Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Malaysia, between February 2019 to July 2019. Methodology: Interview sessions are conducted among four language instructors to see how they perceive the effectiveness of guided mobile learning intervention towards teaching and learning. Content Analysis is later adopted to analyse the interview data where specific themes are derived. The concept of MIM that incorporates appropriate web learning tools is developed and explained. MIM functions as a comprehensive guide that matches the course contents to the most appropriate web learning tools. Results: The results show that all instructors perceive guided mobile learning through the MIM positively. This study implicates that guided mobile learning could be useful in facilitating the teaching approach shift from conventional to technology-assisted, enabling the integration of interactive activities in learning, developing specific language skills and enhancing engagement. It should also be noted that there may be some adaptation barriers of mobile learning that can hinder learning process. Conclusion: While it is recommended that mobile learning is integrated with lessons, to achieve effective results, however, as suggested in the findings of this study, it has to be guided, thus a proper module that links the syllabus to the mobile apps needs to be created.
