West EL Minia area is considered one of promising areas for future development plans in Egypt. The current research provides an integrated remote sensing data, microfacies analysis, field studies and geochemical approach to investigate the groundwater resources in West El Minia area. Three aquifers were investigated; Oligocene sandstone, Middle Eocene limestone and Nubian sandstone aquifer. New data about two aquifers (Nubian sandstone and Oligocene) are presented in the current study extracted from well logging interpretation and wells rock samples. The groundwater of the Oligocene sandstone and Middle Eocene limestone aquifers are recorded under unconfined conditions, while the Nubian sandstone is recorded as confined aquifer. The total thicknesses of the three aquifers were identified through interpretation of the well logging data (180 m for Oligocene aquifer, 445 m for the Middle Eocene aquifer, and 145 m for Nubian sandstone aquifer). The present study discusses the groundwater levels, the geological controls and groundwater chemistry of the recorded aquifers. The low salinity values (560-916 mg/l) and water table map as well as the obtained stable isotopes data reveal that the Middle Eocene aquifer is recharged from the Nile River where it has isotopic signature of the modern Nile water with slightly contribution of paleo-water of the Nubian sandstone. The area is affected by sets of faults associated with fractures and joints and facilitates the groundwater recharge. Based on multi GIS data layers, remote sensing data, geologic investigation as well as geophysical data, a future groundwater strategy were presented.

This study is focused on developing an approach for spatial mapping of groundwater by considering four types of factors (geological, topographical, hydrological, and climatic factors), and by using different bivariate statistical models, such as frequency ratio (FR) and Shannon’s entropy (SE). The developed approach was applied in a fractured aquifer basin (Ameln Basin, Western Anti-Atlas, Morocco), to map the spatial variation of groundwater potential. Fifteen factors (15) influencing groundwater were considered in this study, including slope degree, slope aspect, elevation, topographic wetness index (TWI), slope length (LS), topographic position index (TPI), plane curvature, profile curvature, drainage density, lineament density, distance to rivers and fault network, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), lithology, and land surface temperature (LST). The potential maps produced were then classified into five classes to illustrate the spatial view of each potential class obtained. The predictive capacity of the frequency ratio and Shannon’s entropy models was determined using two different methods, the first one based on the use of flow data from 49 boreholes drilled in the study area, to test and statistically calibrate the predictive capacity of each model. The results show that the percentage of positive water points corresponds to the most productive areas (high water flow) (42.86% and 30.61% for the FR and SE models, respectively). On the other hand, the low water flows are consistent with the predicted unfavorable areas for hydrogeological prospecting (4.08% for the FR model and 6.12% for the SE model). Additionally, the second validation method involves the integration of 7200 Hz apparent resistivity data to identify conductive zones that are groundwater circulation zones. The interpretation of the geophysical results shows that the high-potential zones match with low apparent resistivity zones, and therefore promising targets for hydrogeological investigation. The FR and SE models have proved very efficient for hydrogeological mapping at a fractured basement area and suggest that the northern and southern part of the study area, specifically the two major fault zones (Ameln Valley in the north, and the Tighmi-Tifermit Valley in the south) has an adequate availability of groundwater, whereas the central part, covering the localities of Tarçouat, Boutabi, Tililan, and Ighalen, presents a scarcity of groundwater. The trend histogram of the evolution of positive water points according to each potentiality class obtained suggests that the FR model was more accurate than the SE model in predicting the potential groundwater areas. The results suggest that the proposed approach is very important for hydrogeological mapping of fractured aquifers, and the resulting maps can be helpful to managers and planners to generate groundwater development plans and attenuate the consequences of future drought.

Perched groundwater resources on the northwestern coast of Egypt have thus far been little studied. However, if replenished by rainwater, they can provide a considerable amount of renewable water, i.e., for sustainable irrigation. These resources are limited, show different salinity contents and are endangered by overuse, pollution and by the sea level rising in the context of global warming. This paper presents new climatic data, geomorphologic, geologic, geochemical and hydrological researches in combination with remote sensing and GIS applications from Fuka Basin. Fuka constitutes a special synclinal basin where the interbedded limestone and clays have been folded into gentle synclinal structures. Fractured Middle Miocene limestone represents the bearing formation for the perched groundwater. According to the hydrogeochemical analysis and the PHREEQC model, the aquifer is recharged during the winter season by rainwater from the surrounding tableland and the chemical evolution of the perched water is attributed to water-rock interaction and mixing of fresh water with sea water. The salinity of the perched water ranges from 2,126 to 2,644 mg/L whereas for the deep groundwater it reaches 9,800 mg/L. The study explores origin and potential of the perched groundwater of Fuka Basin and gives recommendations for a future sustainable use and further investigations.

In the last decade, attention has been devoted to the southern part of the Egyptian Red Sea coast due to the large touristic and mining activities. Egypt spares no effort to develop it, to build new urban communities, and to create new job opportunities. Many comprehensive planning studies have been conducted. Many luxurious tourist spots, airports, and harbors have been constructed. These areas are subjected to flash floods, which represent a frequent threat to these urbanization activities that may cause losses in livelihood. By analyzing the geomorphologic features of the study area, intense stream networks are detected that, with the available metrological data, require flood management and analysis to mitigate the possible negative effects and to benefit from the estimation of flood water. Rahbaa basin is a sub-catchment of wadi Hodin. Flash floods within this area threaten the Red Sea coastal plain as well as the main coastal roads. It also directly drained out to the sea, which leads to a loss of huge amounts of flood water that is useful for arid regions. Using geographic information system and remote-sensing tools with the application of a comprehensive graphical modeling (watershed modeling system) supports the hydrological modeling of HEC-1. The total amount of runoff is calculated and the hydrograph of the 50-year return period is computed using rainfall historical data.
