BACKGROUND A novel synthetic terpolymer resin involving anthranilic acid/o‐toluidine/formaldehyde (AOTF) was synthesized for the recovery of harmful and heavy metal ions. The resin was characterized by physico‐chemical, elemental, FTIR, NMR and SEM analysis. Batch separation was used under the following conditions: different concentrations of various electrolytes; variation of pH and time intervals to determine the ion‐exchange properties of the resin for specific metal ions viz. Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+. Kinetic and equilibrium studies were also carried out with the terpolymer resin to evaluate the effectiveness of metal ion removal. RESULTS The ion‐exchange capacity for the resin was found to be 5.02 milli mol g−1 indicating that the resin is a more effective ion‐exchanger than some phenolic and polystyrene ion‐exchangers. The amount of Cu2+, Ni2+ and Fe3+ taken up by the resin was 3.12, 2.25 and 2.34 milli mol g−1 at 0.5 mol L−1, respectively, hence the order of metal ion uptake at high concentrations is Cu2+ > Fe3+ > Ni2+. But at lower concentration of 0.01 mol L−1, the uptake of Zn2+ was 2.54, Co2+ was 1.77 and Pb2+ was 0.99 milli mol g−1, respectively, and the order of metal ion uptake is Zn2+ > Co2+ > Pb2+. CONCLUSION The results revealed that the synthesized ion‐exchanger could act as a good ion‐exchanging agent for the removal of toxic and hazardous wastes from industrial effluents. The results are compared with those for some commercial resins and earlier reported resins which indicate that the resin has an excellent capability to remove specific metal ions from waste solutions. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry

Terpolymer of 2-amino-6-nitro-benzothiazole-ethylenediamine-formaldehyde (BEF) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and various spectral techniques like FTIR, UV-Visible, and 1H and 13C-NMR. The terpolymer metal complexes were prepared with Cu2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ metal ions using BEF terpolymer as a ligand. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis and IR, UV-Visible, ESR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectral studies. Gel permeation chromatography was used to determine the molecular weight of the ligand. The surface features and crystalline behavior of the ligand and its complexes were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction methods. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to analyze the thermal stability of the ligand and its metal complexes. Kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E a) and order of reaction (n) and thermodynamic parameters, namely, ΔS, ΔF, S*, and Z, were calculated using Freeman-Carroll (FC), Sharp-Wentworth (SW), and Phadnis-Deshpande (PD) methods. Thermal degradation model of the terpolymer and its metal complexes was also proposed using PD method. Biological activities of the ligand and its complexes were tested against Shigella sonnei, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella typhimurium bacteria and Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium species, Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Mucor species fungi.

An effectual functionalized synthetic resin involving anthranilic acid/4-nitroaniline/formaldehyde was synthesized for the detoxification of hazardous metal ions. The resin was characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1 H, and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and its morphology was established through scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The resin was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis to assess the thermal stability, in which the resin could be used in high temperature aqueous solutions for the elimination of harmful metal ions. The ion-exchange property of the resin was evaluated by batch technique for specific metal ions viz. Fe . The study was extended to three variations such as effect of metal ion uptake in the presence of various electrolytes in different concentrations, effect of pH, and effect of contact time. The outcome proved that the resin can be used as a strong cation-exchanger to remove various metal ions from the solutions. The resin could be regenerated and reused with quantitative recovery of metal ions for few cycles. On comparison with the earlier reported resins, the synthesized resin has found excellent capability of metal ion recovery. The resin possesses an utmost ion-exchange capacity, which is in good harmony with isotherm models and kinetics.
