Ataxia cerebelar tipo II, também conhecida por ataxia spinocerebelar 7 (SCA7), é uma patologia neurodegenerativa com prognóstico sombrio de hereditariedade. Acomete ambos os sexos e em qualquer idade, caracterizando-se pela degeneração variável do córtex cerebelar, oliva inferior, núcleos de pontine, gânglios basais, cordas espinhais e nervos periféricos. As pessoas não morrem pela doença em si mas pelas complicações clínicas associadas. Estudo exploratório, que teve por objetivo: identificar os déficits de conhecimento familiar acerca da ataxia II, estabelecendo as repercussões destes na qualidade de vida dos portadores. Como população elegeu-se os familiares de portadores de ataxia que fazem parte da Associação Beneficente em Prol dos Portadores deAtaxia II (ABPAT), com Sede em Crateús, Ceará.Aamostra consta de dezesseis pessoas, sendo 12 mulheres e 04 homens. A coleta dos dados realizou-se durante os meses de março, abril e maio de 1999, tendo sido usado questionário contendo perguntas abertas e fechadas. Sem perspectivas de cura, a grande arma da família, ainda, é a informação no que se refere à detecção precoce, ao retardo da evolução dos sintomas e prevenção do surgimento de problemas associados. Concluiu-se, todavia, ser comum a existência de mais de um portador sintomático na família dos entrevistados, e que esse fato pode ter grande relação com o pouco esclarecimento/conscientização acerca da transmissão genética e de como as gerações mais recentes podem sofrer mais intensamente dos efeitos dessa problemática.
