KEYWORDS cloud computing, computer networks, internetOver the past two eTechnology columns, we have discussed cloud computing in general-definitions, uses, strengths, and drawbacks-and cloud computing services meant specifically for libraries-for example, cloud-based ILS services, discovery layers, and content management systems. In this column, we will wrap up our conversation with a brief survey of general cloud applications that can improve productivity and=or take the place of desktop applications. To recap the previous discussions, the National Institute of Standards and Technology defines cloud computing as: a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider
