Este estudo teve como objetivo principal desvelar a percepção de mulheres donas de casa, em união estável, com filhos em idade préadolescente e adolescente, com relação à prevenção das DST e AIDS. Foi realizado em um bairro popular da cidade de Cruz Alta, no noroeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, onde situa-se um Núcleo Habitacional da (COHAB). Para fundamentar o estudo, buscou-se apoio na Teoria da Diversidade e Universalidade do Cuidado Cultural de Madeleine Leininger. O método da etnoenfermagem foi selecionado como caminho metodológico, onde utilizou-se as entrevistas com perguntas abertas, pré-selecionadas e/ou informais e complementada com a observação participante para o levantamento dos dados. Dentre o grupo das onze, mulheres/famílias seis foram consideradas informanteschave, e cinco informantes gerais. A análise dos dados foi realizada com base na etnoenfermagem e de Spradley (1979). A análise transcorreu desde a fase da coleta de dados até a formulação dos achados e dos temas culturais encontrados. Os resultados evidenciaram contrastes nos cuidados com a prevenção das DST e AIDS. Foram encontradas mulheres que não se cuidam por que depositam extrema confiança no esposo/parceiro; mulheres que eventualmente se cuidam uma vez que desconfiam do esposo/ parceiro e mulheres que literalmente se cuidam sempre por não confiarem no esposo/parceiro. Constatou-se que os pais preocupam-se com a prevenção das DST e AIDS nos filhos e adotam as conversas sobre sexo e sexualidade dentro de casa, para que os mesmos possam descobrir com tranqüilidade os eventos que envolvem a vida sexual. Diante destes resultados considerou-se que por trás das condutas de cuidados familiares que se apresentaram na prevenção das DST e AIDS, existem crenças, valores e significados que devem ser reconhecidos e valorizados pelo enfermeiro que deseja trabalhar com a prevenção das DST e AIDS em famílias, grupos e comunidades.
