Family Centered care is a model that is practiced and encouraged in child health care. It considers family as partners and collaborators in care of children. It aims at involving family in all aspects of child care. Family centered care also mentions involvement of child. However, emphasis is given more on family than child and does not take into account the older child's capacity for independent decision making and right to privacy. As such, child's needs are missed out. With child centered care, children are involved and supported at all levels of care based on their age and developmental stage. This paper aims to stress the importance of involving children within family centered care. Involving children in their care, makes them feel less threatened by the health care professional and their self esteem is promoted. Currently, no studies have been identified in Malawi that demonstrates full partnership between the family, child and the nurse. Furthermore, Family Centered Care and Child Centered Care as models are not fully practiced. It is therefore important to practice both family and child centered care in child health care if the needs of both family and children are to be addressed concurrently.
Background Significant improvements in under-five mortality in Malawi have been demonstrated over the past thirty years; however, Malawian healthcare remains with gaps in availability and access to quality pediatric critical care nursing training and education. To improve expertise of pediatric critical care nurses in Malawi, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), and Mercy James Center (MJC) entered a partnership with Seed Global Health, a US non-governmental organization. A needs assessment was conducted to understand the training needs of nurses currently working in pediatric critical care and in preparation for the development of a specialized Master’s in Child Health pathway in Pediatric Critical Care (PCC) Nursing at KUHeS. Methods The needs assessment was completed using a survey questionnaire formatted using an ABCDE (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Exposure) framework. The questionnaire had Likert scale and yes/no questions. Data was manually entered into excel and was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results One hundred and fifty-three nurses at QECH and MJC responded to the survey. Most nurses were between the ages of 25 and 35 years (N = 98, 64%), female (N = 105, 69%), and held either a Bachelors (N = 72, 47%) or diploma (N = 70, 46%) in nursing. Nurses had high rates of confidence in certain skills: airway management (N = 120, 99%), breathing assessment & management (N = 153, 100%). However, nurses demonstrated little to no confidence in areas such as: mechanical ventilation (N = 68, 44%), ECG evaluation (N = 74, 48%), and arterial blood gas collection & interpretation (N = 49, 32%). Conclusion It is important to identify priority areas for training and skills development to address in the PCC master’s within the child health pathway at KUHeS. Ideally this partnership will produce practice-ready PCC nurses and will establish a recognized PCC nursing workforce in Malawi.
Aims: To conduct a systematic review of complementary therapies for wound management.Methods: An initial search of the literature was conducted using a machine-learning assisted instrument. Based on initial results, literature was hand reviewed by at least two team members for inclusion. Data were extracted and quality was assessed for included articles at the full text level.Results: 67 articles were included on a variety of complementary therapies for wound management including original research such as randomized controlled trials, nonrandomized controlled trials, case reports, and cohort studies that assessed the effectiveness of complementary therapies in the management of wounds among adult patients. Studies assessing the effectiveness of complementary therapies on patients with episiotomies, complementary therapies using body-mind therapies, studies for which the full text was inaccessible, and non-English language studies were excluded. Resulting treatments were honey, maggot debridement, Aloe vera, Calendula officinalis, Hypericum perforatum ointment, dragon's blood, curcumin, banana leaf dressing, potato peels, and tea tree oil. Conclusion:Honey, maggot debridement, Aloe vera, Calendula officinalis, Hypericum perforatum ointment, dragon's blood, curcumin, banana leaf dressing, and tea tree oil show promise as low cost alternatives for wound management.
