Objective: To validate the construct and test the reliability of the Brazilian version of Hypertension Knowledge-Level Scale. Methods: Methodological research with 220 participants in a primary health care unit from Curitiba, Paraná. The data were collected with a social demographic questionnaire and the Brazilian version of the scale. The construct validity and reliability were assessed using Cronbach’s Alpha, Pearson’s Correlation and Analysis of Variance. The discriminant validity was verified comparing groups of people with hypertension and without, using T test. Results: Cronbach’s Alpha was 0.74. The groups comparison showed that people with hypertension had better results (p<0,001). Pearson’s Correlation showed that the questions measure different aspects of the same construct, justifying its organization in subdimensions. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of Hypertension Knowledge-Level Scale is a reliable instrument, which had its construct and criterion validated to measure knowledge about hypertension among Brazilian people. It can help health professionals with planning educative actions.

Conclusão: os discentes perceberam melhora na competência clínica, e ao final do estágio afirmaram serem capazes e terem habilidades para realizar atividades sozinhos ou com alguma supervisão.

Objective: The objective was to identify the types of complementary and alternative medicine used by patients with hypertension and factors related to their use. Methods: This is an integrative review of literature. Articles published between 2011 and 2015 were selected. The search was performed on the CAPES/MEC electronic database, and the descriptors used were: hypertension, complementary therapies, complementary remedies, flower essences, color therapy, aromatherapy, phytotherapy, chinese herbal drugs and massage. Results: In total, 343 articles were found and 6 were selected. The most frequent therapy found was phytotherapy, mainly in decoction and tea. Mostly women and married people used complementary therapies. The main related factors were conventional treatment side-effects, hope to treat the cause of the disease, and faith of cure. Conclusion: Health professionals need to know the types of therapies, their benefits, interactions and side-effects in order to guide their patients. These therapies, if complementary and properly used, can help to control blood pressure.
