RESUMENLa Nepeta cataria es una planta de la familia de la menta, mundialmente conocida por su efecto sobre el comportamiento de los félidos por su similitud a las feromonas, relacionada con uno de sus componentes: la nepetalactona. Favorece relajación aunque, entre los animales sobre los que ejerce su acción, se dan casos en que hay una respuesta activadora e incluso de agresividad.Mediante una revisión de los estudios publicados sobre las propiedades de esta planta, buscamos la demostración de su acción modificadora del comportamiento de los felinos.Algunas de las propiedades que se le han atribuido no han sido demostradas, como el efecto relajante en gatos o su acción sobre la erección en ratas, mientras que otras muchas, tales como el efecto analgésico o el repelente, están en "desuso", y sin embargo parecen presentar base científica.
