OverviewEco-design has become a central research issue for interaction design, as emerging interactive products can create serious environmental impacts while products are being used. We investigate a design method and develop case studies for eco-friendly interaction. A main concept of the design method is to apply unconscious human behaviors in interaction design. Products designed with this method are expected to be used unconsciously by users with reduced environmental impacts. In this paper, we present a framework of design space matrix and initial case studies for the design method. For the framework, we identified the types of interaction behaviors causing environmental impacts and the attributes of unconscious human behaviors. Based on the framework, three design cases -a power cord, a trashcan and a speedometer of an automobile -were developed. The proposed framework and design cases can be used as a base of an advanced eco-friendly interaction design method. In this paper, we introduce digital rubbing, which is a playful and intuitive interaction technique for transferring a graphic image directly onto paper. We designed TransPen and MimeoPad to realize digital rubbing. With these drawing tools, children and adults can use rubbing motions to transfer a digital image directly to paper and produce a drawing with a personal touch and natural texture, just as in traditional rubbing. We expect that digital rubbing technique would be useful in arts and design as a new way of expression in the process of drawing and editing ideas. In addition, the suggested interaction devices have the full potential to become new drawing toys for children.

Abstract. This paper presents the Button Keyboard, a very small wearable keyboard with universal usability. The Button Keyboard has high wearability and social acceptance due to its remarkably small size. As it is roughly button sized (33㎜×33㎜), it can be worn on the body without any discomfort. In addition, it adapts a mobile QWERTY layout to improve text entry for general users without special training. After an evaluation of the text input performance, it was found that the keyboard provides sufficient text input speed and learnability in spite of its small size. Furthermore, a touch-sensitive keypad divides input states by recognizing finger motions. Therefore, the system can provide visual or auditory feed-forwards to users. Thus, users can confirm the key before they execute. This previewable feature makes the keyboard a highly usable example of a wearable computer, in that it reduces the focus of attention and frequency of error. Moreover, it has the potential to assist the disabled by providing effective and appropriate ranges of feed-forwards.

Systematic design models are useful in the professional education of both designers and engineers; they also support complex multi-faceted design activities that involve a large number of individuals. This paper introduces a range of design models, but then focuses on the linked node model, which uses nodes to indicate the properties of an outcome and links to show the connections between the nodes. The model is based on the premise that good design serves to generate a harmoniously integrated outcome. The paper also explores a range of tools and ‘design tackles’ that can be used in a systematic approach to design. Finally, it introduces a design project aimed at creating better user experiences in Dongdaemun market in Seoul, Korea.
