Control room operators are faced with frequent security-economy decision-making situations necessitated by stressed system operating conditions, and there is increased need for securityeconomy decision-support tools. Although probabilistic methods are promising in this regard, they have been mainly used in planning environments. This task force paper explores their use for operational decision-making, comparing them to the more traditional deterministic approach. Two examples are used to facilitate this comparison via overload and low voltage security assessment to identify secure regions of operation for a small 5-bus system and for the IEEE Reliability Test System. The results of this comparison show that the probabilistic approach offers several inherent advantages.
In this paper, a generation expansion planning model and a transmission expansion planning model are proposed to inform investment decisions from the perspectives of generation companies and ISOs, respectively. Interactions between large-scale wind integration and transmission system planning are analyzed, and a new computational procedure of system expansion planning that coordinates generation and transmission investment is presented. The cooptimization of energy and ancillary services markets is considered to capture the impacts of wind power on the operation of the electric system. Benders decomposition is employed to reduce the overall computation time.
With the transition toward a smart grid, the power system has become strongly intertwined with the information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. The interdependency of both domains requires a combined analysis of physical and ICT processes, but simulating these together is a major challenge due to the fundamentally different modeling and simulation concepts. After outlining these challenges, such as time synchronization and event handling, this paper presents an overview of state-of-the-art solutions to interface power system and ICT simulators.
