PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the profitability of European Union (EU) firms with the aim of confirming the mean‐reverting pattern documented by earlier research in the USA. In addition, the paper classifies firms by industry sectors across countries to investigate potential differences.Design/methodology/approachThe paper follows closely a model where the forecasting of profitability is done through year‐by‐year regressions. This approach allows the use of large samples and the year‐by‐year variation in the slopes. Both a linear and a nonlinear partial adjustment models are used for forecasting profitability.FindingsFindings show that the profitability does follow a mean‐reverting process and that profitability forecasting can be improved substantially by exploiting the mean‐reverting feature. Further analysis shows that mean reversion does not play an important role in EU countries as in the USA and there is no evidence of nonlinearity in mean reversion. It was also found that mean‐reverting speed differ across industries, with utilities, financial and manufacturing among the lowest.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample companies are not originated from a single economy, but from 15 different countries with different macro‐economic conditions that might influence their profitability.Originality/valueStudying the European market, where the institutional and financial structure of firms are different from the USA allows us to observe whether the US results are sample specific or can be generalized and applied elsewhere. The difference observed in these sample results is probably due to the fact that the US economy is more competitive than that of EU.

The synthesis of a new series of asymmetric cationic gemini surfactant and the investigation of their micellization behaviors by electronic spin resonance (ESR) as well as the surface tension measurements were reported. 4‐Oxo‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (4‐oxo‐TEMPO) is used as the spin probe. The surfactants studied have the general formula [CnH2n+1 N+ (CH3)2C6H12N+(CH3)2CmH2m+1]Br2−, referred to as dimeric n‐6‐m surfactants, in which n and m are the numbers of carbon atoms in the asymmetric side alkyl chains. From the experimental data, rotational correlation time τc, surface tension and critical micelle concentration (cmc) values, the physical properties of these new surfactants have preliminarily been e‐valuated. It is shown that this new series of asymmetric gemini surfactants has interesting micellization behaviors, and they are very different in aggregating tendency from their asymmetric analogues.

In this report, we gave the first case of successful treatment for laryngeal NMC, which is exceedingly rare with dismal prognosis. intensity‐modulated radiation therapy accompanied by traditional Chinese medicine was administrated for the young woman, instead of radical resection, and she got continuous remission for more than 2 years, with no recurrence detected.

A fade DAR ( diphenylamine-ediazonium-formaldehyde resin) assisted layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of ultrathin organic film of aromatic compounds has been investigated. The multilayer of pyrene or anthracene was fabricated through simple dipping of the glass slide into the mixed solution of DAR with the target compounds. In this method, DAR acted as an assistant compound to help the assembbg of the aromatic compounds. Such a convenient deposition method not only reserves the advantages of the traditional LbL technique but also simplines the technique and extends the effectiveness of LbL technique to small molecules without any charge.
