Three new species of the Cameroonian endemic freshwater crab genus BueaCumberlidge, Mvogo Ndongo, Clark & Daniels, 2019 are described. The new species were collected from protected areas in the Southwest region of Cameroon, the Korup and Bakossi National Parks and the Mt. Nlonako Ecological Reserve. These species are distinguished from each other and from the type species of the genus, Buea asylos (Cumberlidge, 1993), by a combination of morphological characters (carapace, thoracic sternum, chelipeds, and male first gonopod) and by partial sequences of three mitochondrial DNA genes (COI, 12S rRNA, and 16S rRNA). A phylogenetic analysis that included representatives of all other freshwater crab genera found in Cameroon recovered each of the new species as a well-supported distinct lineage. An identification key is also provided for the four species of Buea and the conservation status of the new species is discussed.
The endemic freshwater crab, Louisea yabassi Mvogo Ndongo, von Rintelen & Cumberlidge, 2019, is currently only known from three populations in the biodiversity-rich rainforests of southwestern Cameroon. The first record of L. yabassi dates back to 1908 from Yabassi, while the other two populations were discovered in December 2019 and March 2020 from the Ebo Forest near Yabassi. These specimens were initially identified as L. edeaensis (Bott, 1969), but were subsequently assigned to L. yabassi. The newly-discovered populations of L. yabassi provided important data on its habitat, population structure and geographical distribution, all critical knowledge for conservation measures. Reported here are the anthropogenic threats to L. yabassi and its rainforest habitat, which include forest destruction, agricultural encroachment, water pollution and firewood collection. This information is inherently useful in the assessment of the extinction risk of L. yabassi and highlights the importance of implementing strategies for preserving primary rainforest and its associated aquatic habitats in Central Africa.
La thématique développée dans ce présent article appréhende l’espace halieutique sur le littoral camerounais partant d’un préalable analytique de différents éléments interconnectés qui constituent le système Pêche ou Halieutique. Elle présente par la suite les différentes formes de constructions de l’espace halieutique, et pose une analyse sur la pérennisation de l’activité de pêche artisanale face à l’essor de nouvelles contraintes industrielles et transformations spatiales des sociétés de pêcheurs. La plurifonctionnalité de l’espace littoral donne dans ce document toute l’importance de l’implication des approches géographiques. Ces méthodes concourent à une meilleure compréhension des dynamiques d’acteurs endogènes et exogènes qui composent les différents systèmes Pêche des régions côtières du Littoral et Sud Cameroun.
