These results provide further evidence for the link between family structure and mental health in Asian communities. They also challenge some of the assumptions about maternal mental health, its effects on child adjustment and its links to systems of social support. In extended families where social support was likely to be most available mothers were at greatest risk, while their children profited and this advantage seemed to be linked to the grandmaternal presence.

Aims and methodThe study explored the impact of National Health Service changes on the working and personal lives of psychiatrists. A questionnaire survey was carried out with psychiatrists working in the South Eastern Division of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.ResultsThe response rate was 44.9%. Changes to services have reduced stress in some areas, but increased stress in others. Over the past decade early retirement has become less popular, but psychiatrists have been more likely to self-prescribe and have suicidal thoughts.Clinical implicationsThe increasing involvement of psychiatrists in leadership may be a way to reduce adverse impacts of future changes on their working lives.

The unusually high levels of depression and anxiety displayed by Muslim mothers living in extended families can in part be accounted for by patterns of intergenerational discrepancy. These possibly reflect discordant world views within those families that have been assimilated into the dominant British culture.

Parkinson's disease is associated with a high prevalence of psychiatric co‐morbidity including psychosis. In this review, Dr Latoo and colleagues discuss the epidemiology, aetiology and diagnosis of psychosis in Parkinson's disease and emphasise the importance of close liaison between neurologists and psychiatrists for optimal management.
