As part of pre-registration midwifery education, the Nursing and Midwifery Council stipulates that students need to progressively develop essential key skills including problem-solving and communication. It is insufficient for these skills to be understood on a purely academic level; they need to be applied in clinical practice. This reflective account illustrates how progression and attainment of these skills and the application thereof is an achievable standard. Additionally it demonstrates the requirement for students to build on these skills so that they learn to effect positive outcomes in challenging situations which occur frequently in the midwifery profession.
