Los defectos del tubo neural (DTN) son considerados las malformaciones congénitas multifactoriales más frecuentes y comunes en humanos que afecta el desarrollo del sistema nervioso central, de los cuales presentan una mayor incidencia la espina bífida y la anencefalia. La estrategia preventiva de estos defectos congénitos es el consumo de ácido fólico; sin embargo, el efecto preventivo de esta vitamina esencial varía de acuerdo a la interacción entre factores genéticos y ambientales a la que se encuentre expuesto el feto. Además, las condiciones metabólicas maternas permiten una interacción materno-fetal perjudicial para el feto, que aumenta el riesgo de desarrollar estos defectos congénitos. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es describir la interacción de factores genéticos y ambientales implicados en el metabolismo del ácido fólico y la patogenia de DNT. Se espera impulsar el desarrollo de métodos que permitan diferenciar con mayor claridad los factores de susceptibilidad que contribuyen a la etiología de los DNT.
