Smokeless tobacco (Snus) is a substance that contains nicotine, which has been placed on World Anti-Doping Agency's 2014 Monitoring Program. A proliferation of nicotine use in sport has been observed in recent years, but little is known regarding its effects, especially on football players' performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of Snus on physical performance, heart rate variability, subjective activation, mental fatigue, and perceived readiness before a physical test in non-smoker, non-Snus user, amateur football players. Participants were administered either Snus or placebo 40 min prior to a fitness test battery (handgrip test, countermovement jump, agility test, and Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test). Results showed that Snus intake (compared with placebo) increased perceived mental fatigue level and mental load, and reduced perceived readiness level and heart rate variability. No significant differences between the two experimental conditions were found in either performance in the physical tests or perceived physical fatigue levels. In light of these results, Snus could not be considered an ergogenic substance. On the contrary, based on the extant evidence linking mental load and fatigue with physical performance, we argue that the observed negative effects on mental fatigue, perceived readiness, and heart rate variability should be considered.
Abstract. The progress of athletes in terms of equality in the Spanish society is not only measured by the access of women to sport or decision-making, but also by knowing aspects such as social reality and the difficulties they face. In this article the state of the knowledge of Spanish women’s sport competition is analyzed from a gender perspective taking into account the following factors: the regulatory framework on equality and no discrimination in sport, sport policies with a gender perspective carried out by the Consejo Superior de Deportes and sport federations, gender discrimination, mass media and sexist language. The study stands in an interpretive paradigm and uses a qualitative methodology. Nine expert interviews are collected: three autonomous managers, two female federative managers, one sports lawyer, one sports journalist and two former university professor experts in gender and sport. The instrument used was the semi-structured interview. The results reveal a need for changing the reality. There is a need for a comprehensive implementation of the regulatory framework with a gender perspective to the sports field, the review of policies and programs with a gender perspective carried out by the sports federations and a modernization of federation management.
Introduction: child overweight and obesity have become, in recent decades, an epidemic that affects developed countries in particular. Many increasingly negative health impacts are related to childhood obesity. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obese people in a city of northern Spain, and to identify the factors that influence this prevalence and its relationship with blood pressure.
Although further research is required, this study shows that certain modifiable aspects in the organizational or school environment can influence the habits of school children at a fundamental stage of their development.
AbstractThe aim of this study was to analyze the quality of life related to health (QLRH) and physical activity (PA) patterns of adolescents with overweight or obesity and adolescents with normal weight. A total of 106 subjects (12.06 ± 0.9 years of age) from a school in the city of Granada (Spain) participated in the study. The Kid-Kindl version of the Kindl questionnaire (adapted and validated to Spanish) was used to measure QLRH by means of the dimensions of physical well-being, emotional well-being, self-esteem, family, friends, and school. Results demonstrate that the percentage of active boys (those that practice 2 or more hours of moderate to vigorous PA outside of school) is significantly greater than the percentage of active girls. When comparing the PA done by subjects with normal weight and those with obesity/overweight, it is observed that subjects with normal weight are significantly more active. For the points obtained in the questionnaire about quality of life, it is shown that subjects with normal weight obtain significantly better scores in general. This difference is also observed in all other dimensions of the questionnaire, except in the "Family" dimension where there are no differences; ho...
