2,5-Di- tert-butyl-1,4-bis(2-methoxyethoxy)benzene (DBBB) is studied as a redox shuttle additive for overcharge protection for a 1.5 Ah graphite/C-LFP lithium-ion pouch cell for the first time. The electrochemical performance demonstrated that the protecting additive remains inert during the extended standard cycling for 4000 cycles. When a 100% overcharge is introduced in the charging protocol, the baseline cell fails rapidly during the first abusive event, whereas the cell containing DBBB additive withstands 700 overcharge cycles with 87% capacity retention and no gas evolution or cell swelling was observed. It is the first time the effectiveness of the DBBB as overcharge protection additive in a large pouch cell format is demonstrated.

The end-of-life event of the battery system of an electric vehicle is defined by a fixed end-of-life threshold value. However, this kind of end-of-life threshold does not capture the application and battery characteristics and, consequently, it has a low accuracy in describing the real end-of-life event. This paper proposes a systematic methodology to determine the end-of-life threshold that describes accurately the end-of-life event. The proposed methodology can be divided into three phases. In the first phase, the health indicators that represent the aging behavior of the battery are defined. In the second phase, the application specifications and battery characteristics are evaluated to generate the end-of-life criteria. Finally, in the third phase, the simulation environment used to calculate the end-of-life threshold is designed. In this third phase, the electric-thermal behavior of the battery at different aging conditions is simulated using an electro-thermal equivalent circuit model. The proposed methodology is applied to a high-energy electric vehicle application and to a high-power electric vehicle application. The stated hypotheses and the calculated end-of-life threshold of the high-energy application are empirically validated. The study shows that commonly assumed 80 or 70% EOL thresholds could lead to mayor under or over lifespan estimations.

Real time state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) monitoring plays an essential role in electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and generally in battery powered applications. Between these two state estimations, only the SoC has been studied rigorously until the current dates, while SoH or capacity estimation are much less referenced on the literature. Additionally, the SoC and the SoH estimation are strongly correlated by widely used coulomb counting equation and consequently wrong capacity estimation would lead to a SoC estimation error, which in turn, will lead to a further capacity estimation error. In this sense, the first job was to develop the equivalent electric model, design SoC estimator and to verify both of them experimentally. Then, different alternative techniques for estimating the capacity are analyzed, selecting the best choice considering the observability degree of the object of estimation: capacity. Then, in this paper we propose a new method for estimating the capacity, called iterative transferred charge, which adapts the current capacity estimation value based on the SoC correction made by the corresponding estimator. Finally, the developed algorithm is evaluated by comparing the capacity estimation with the reference over the life of the cell, by extensive experimental tests.

The estimation of lithium ion capacity fade and impedance rise on real application is always a challenging work due to the associated complexity. This work envisages the study of the battery charging profile indicators (CPI) to estimate battery health indicators (capacity and resistance, BHI), for high energy density lithium-ion batteries. Different incremental capacity (IC) parameters of the charging profile will be studied and compared to the battery capacity and resistance, in order to identify the data with the best correlation. In this sense, the constant voltage (CV) step duration, the magnitudes of the IC curve peaks, and the position of these peaks will be studied. Additionally, the behaviour of the IC curve will be modeled to determine if there is any correlation between the IC model parameters and the capacity and resistance. Results show that the developed IC parameter calculation and the correlation strategy are able to evaluate the SOH with less than 1% mean error for capacity and resistance estimation. The algorithm has been implemented on a real battery module and validated on a real platform, emulating heavy duty application conditions. In this preliminary validation, 1% and 3% error has been quantified for capacity and resistance estimation.

A unified evaluation framework for stochastic tools is developed in this paper. Firstly, we provide a set of already existing quantitative and qualitative metrics that rate the relevant aspects of the performance of a stochastic prognosis algorithm. Secondly, we provide innovative guidelines to detect and minimize the effect of side aspects that interact on the algorithms’ performance. Those aspects are related with the input uncertainty (the uncertainty on the data and the prior knowledge), the parametrization method and the uncertainty propagation method. The proposed evaluation framework is contextualized on a Lithium-ion battery Remaining Useful Life prognosis problem. As an example, a Particle Filter is evaluated. On this example, two different data sets taken from NCA aged batteries and two semi-empirical aging models available in the literature fed up the Particle Filter under evaluation. The obtained results show that the proposed framework gives enough details to take decisions about the viability of the chosen algorithm.
