El presente trabajo muestra la evolución cronológica de la explotación del oro en el mundo y en Ecuador, partiendo desde la época de la precianuración hasta la denominada fiebre del oro. Se hace énfasis en el aprovechamiento de este recurso que permitió el desarrollo económico de las zonas donde el metal fue explotado y en las consecuencias tanto sociales como ambientales desencadenadas por esta actividad. Además, se describen las técnicas de explotación y refinación, utilizadas para la recuperación de este metal, enfocándose en las técnicas de fito-extracción y fito-remediación como alternativas a los procesos físico-químicos. Finalmente, se resalta cómo Ecuador puede contribuir en el desarrollo de tecnologías alternativas para la extracción de oro, a través del estudio de las características de algunas plantas nativas existentes en la región amazónica.
La contaminación del río Plazayacu se debe a las descargas de aguas residuales de la ciudad de Macas, con esta perspectiva se analizó la intervención del Plazayacu sobre el Copueno y cómo afecta la calidad del agua mediante la determinación de los parámetros fisicoquímicos. Se realizó el monitoreo durante el periodo octubre diciembre 2018 y enero de 2019, en tres diferentes estaciones de muestreo (P1 río Copueno, P2 río Plazayacu y P3 río Copueno 200 metros después de la interacción con el río Plazayacu). Los parámetros del ICA que se realizaron In situ, fueron: pH, Temperatura y Oxígeno Disuelto, los parámetros ex situ fueron analizados en la ESPOCH. Para determinar el ICA se utilizó el software IQAdata, obteniendo una calidad para P1 en octubre y enero de regular mientras que noviembre y diciembre mala. En P2 en los cuatro meses de muestreo se obtuvo una clasificación mala, y para P3 el mes de octubre se presenta una clasificación mala y noviembre, diciembre y enero, regular. Mediante los resultados se determinó que la calidad del agua de P3 no está directamente influenciada por el afluente del Plazayacu debido a que es el punto con mejor ICA dentro del periodo de monitoreo.
