AbstractThis article offers a theoretical perspective on the managerial actions involved in the evolution of Internet-mediated communities (IMCs) -that is, their conception, creation, growth, maturity, transformation, and death. The aim is to provide a set of directions that can be deployed by management teams in order to develop solutions for problems that arise in their communities, with a special focus on the sustainability imperative. The propositions address likely correlations between the management function and the life and death of IMCs, with future research being needed to empirically test the propositions in a wide range of settings. Our findings add to the body of knowledge on IMCs, whose managerial attributes seem to challenge the traditional vision of strict volunteerism that is present in most sociological frameworks about communities. Theoretical knowledge also benefits from a preliminary discussion about the managerial aspects of an IMC's lifecycle.
