Background: Sporotrichosis is the most common and least severe of deep mycoses. This disease has varied clinic presentation as well as several differential diagnosis. Methods: A cross-sectional and retrospective, individually based, observational study, based on records from the dermatopathology service of a university hospital in Brazil. A total of 175 patients were identified with clinical suspicion of sporotrichosis, from 2009 to 2017. Statistical analysis using prevalence ratios was conducted to characterize the clinicopathologic and epidemiological aspects. Results: The disease was suspected in 175 patients given the clinical presentation. Of these, 86 cases (49.14%) were sporotrichosis, 39 (22.29%) chronic granulomatous inflammatory processes of unidentified etiology, and 5 squamous cell carcinomas (2.86%). The majority of cases (52 or 60.46%) occurred in the upper limbs. A total of 40 samples presented a suppurative chronic granulomatous inflammatory process (46.51%). Only 5 samples (12.50%) showed positive staining (periodic-Schiff acid or GROCOTT). Conclusions: The sporotrichosis cases underwent both cumulative and linear growth, especially in the group above 60 years. Squamous cell carcinomas appeared several times as a misdiagnosis of sporotrichosis by dermatologists, so it should be considered as an important differential diagnose due to the current context of skin cancers.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE The scientific community is constantly assessing the clinical and laboratory manifestations of COVID-19 in the organism. In view of the fragmentation of the large amount of information, knowledge gaps in relation to laboratory markers, and scarcity of papers in Portuguese, we propose a Literature review on laboratory changes observed in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. METHODS Analysis of articles published between December 2019 and May 2020 on the PubMed and SciELO databases. The articles were identified, filtered, and evaluated based on the approach to the subject, language, and impact. Then, the articles were subjected to a thorough reading, in full, by 4 (four) independent researchers. RESULTS Leukopenia and lymphopenia were included in most studies, even in case definitions. Platelet count and platelet-lymphocyte ratio, at peak platelet, were associated with advanced age and longer hospital stay. Eosinopenia showed a sensitivity of 74.7% and specificity of 68.7% and, together with increased CRP, these are one of the future prospects for screening for disease. A high level of procalcitonin may indicate bacterial co-infection, leading to a worse prognosis. COVID-19 manifests itself with increased levels of many inflammatory markers such as IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, IL-7, IL-12, IP10, IFN-γ, MIP1A, MCP1, GSCF, TNF-α, and MCP1/CCL2, as well as LDH, ESR, D-dimer, CK, ALT, and AST. CONCLUSION There is a need for further studies on the new SARS-CoV-2. So far, there is no consensus regarding laboratory findings and their usefulness, whether as a prognostic marker, mortality, or disease severity.

Canine Leproid Granuloma Syndrome (CLGS), also known as canine leprosy, is a cutaneous nodular infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium sp.. Despite being reported worldwide, it is still quite unknown and underdiagnosed. Diagnosis may be achieved by cytopathology or histopathology of skin lesions, but identification of the infectious agent is complex, since bacterial in vitro growth is not possible, relying upon molecular techniques such as PCR to confirm Mycobacterium DNA in the sample. We report a CLGS case in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, diagnosed by cytopathology and submitted to molecular identification of the agent. PCR amplification of hsp65 gene was performed and revealed 100% genetic homology to M. murphy strain. This is the first CLGS report with molecular identification in Rio de Janeiro state, and this finding should raise awareness about CLGS as a differential diagnosis among granulomatous skin diseases in this region.

We report a case of this rare entity presenting in the abdomen, which is the only one reported in this area and the only case of SEC in a patient with so many comorbidities.Case Report:A 58-year-old black male from Brazil reported a nodular lesion in the abdomen with a progressive increase in size and pain and local burning sensation. The histopathological examination showed a syringoid eccrine carcinoma.Conclusions:We present a rare case of SEC and did an extensive literature review in order to describe the clinical characteristics, histopathological findings, immunohistochemical profile, treatments, and difficulties found in the diagnosis of this tumor. To avoid misdiagnosis, we gave special attention to biopsy quality.
