Objetivo: analizar desde el punto de vista teórico, la integración económica a través del comercio y la inversión extranjera directa (IED) entre México y Cuba. Metodología: se empleó la investigación documental, a través de la selección y recopilación de información por medio de la lectura y crítica de documentos y materiales bibliográficos nacionales e internacionales. Resultados: la revisión de las distintas corrientes teóricas sobre el tema de la integración permitió identificar cuáles se aplican al caso concreto del problema de investigación planteado; coadyuvando a explicar los vínculos económicos entre ambos países desde una perspectiva integradora. Limitaciones: al margen de los numerosos trabajos existentes sobre los procesos de integración más avanzados a nivel global, hay pocos estudios teóricos en América Latina sobre esquemas en sus etapas iniciales, que se desarrollan a menor escala. Conclusiones: la etapa actual de los vínculos comerciales entre México y Cuba contiene elementos de un proceso de integración económica en sus primeros estadios, con claras diferencias respecto a los modelos clásicos europeos. La relación comercial se aproxima a un patrón norte-sur, por las diferencias económicas y productivas de ambos países. Por otra parte, aún no se consolida la IED bilateral como un catalizador de la colaboración económica.
