ABSTRACTOne of the problems frequently encountered by people in Indonesia are dental caries. The abundance of food commonly consumed resulting in the onset of dental health problems, caused by a lack of awareness in maintaining oral hygiene. According from WHO database, 90% population of Indonesia is suffering from dental caries. Herbal toothpaste is expected to become an innovative solution, for it does not contain flourida, but contain herbal ingredients from extracts of binahong leaves and basil leaves. This research aims to know the levels of polyphenols that can inhibit the growth of bacteria activities using UV-Visible method, in which sample is cleaned, crushed and then soaked in a solution of ethanol 98% respectively for 7 and 8 days. After that, the solvent was evaporated using an evaporator, combining all toothpaste ingredients and conducting a UV-Visible spectrophotometric analysis with tannat acid comparator. The results showed that the extracts of binahong leaves and basil leaves that has been crushed and macerated for 7 days and 8 days had significant differences of levels of polyphenols, i.e. Polyphenol levels within 1 gram of 7 days basil extract and 7 days binahong extract respectively 274.4 mg and 289.4 mg, whereas 1 gram of basil extract and binahong extract in 8 days of maceration are 194.7 mg and 61.8 mg.
