In the presence of a catalytic amount of RhH(PPh3)4 and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene, an aromatic fluoride, an organic disulfide (0.5 equiv), and triphenylphosphine (0.5 equiv) reacted in refluxing chlorobenzene to give an aryl sulfide in high yield. Since triphenylphosphine trapped fluoride atoms forming phosphine difluoride, both organothio groups of the disulfide reacted effectively, and the fluoride substituent reacted more readily than the chloride and bromide. The reaction of hexafluorobenzene and a diaryl disulfide gave 1,4-diarylthio-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene, 1,2,4,5-tetraarylthio-3,6-difluorobenzene, and hexaarylthiobenzene in a stepwise manner; pentafluorobenzene gave 1-arylthio-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene; 1,2,3,4-tetrafluorobenzene gave 1,2-diarylthio-3,6-difluorobenzene; and 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene gave 1,4-diarylthio-2-5-difluorobenzene. The polyarylthiolation reaction of polyfluorobenzenes exhibited a strong tendency to form 1,4-difluorobenzenes.

A system of RhH(PPh3)4, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, and (p-tol)3P catalyzes the disulfide exchange reaction. Treatment of two symmetrical dialkyl disulfides with the catalyst provides an equilibrium mixture of three disulfides within 15 min in refluxing acetone. The catalyst is active after reaching the equilibrium, and addition of a disulfide to the mixture changes the ratio of the products. The use of 4 mol equiv excess of one of the disulfides provides the unsymmetrical disulfide in a yield exceeding 80%. Disulfide-containing peptides also undergo an exchange reaction. The reactions of diaryl disulfides and dialkyl disulfides are even faster, and reach equilibrium within 5 min at room temperature in the presence of the rhodium complex and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe). This exchange reaction is considerably affected by the substituents on the disulfides. Treatment of diphenyl disulfide, di(p-tolyl) disulfide, and bis(sec-butyl) disulfide yields phenyl p-tolyl disulfide at room temperature with unchanged bis(sec-butyl) disulfide; random disproportionation occurs at reflux. The rhodium catalysis can be used for the exchange reaction of disulfides and diselenides giving selenosulfides as well as disulfides and ditellurides giving tellurinosulfides.

Phenols are ethynylated at the ortho position with silylated chloroethyne in the presence of a catalytic amount of GaCl3 and lithium phenoxide. The lithium salt is essential for the catalysis, and addition of 2,6-di(tert-butyl)-4-methylpyridine inhibits desilylation and hydration of the products. The reaction can be applied to various substituted phenols giving the ortho-ethynylated products in high yields, and the turnover numbers based on GaCl3 are between 8 and 10. The reaction mechanism involves addition of in situ formed phenoxygallium to the haloethyne followed by the elimination of GaCl3.

[figure: see text] Beckmann rearrangement of oxime is catalyzed by [RhCl(cod)]2, trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, and tris(p-tolyl)phosphine in refluxing dichloroethane, giving the corresponding amide in good yield. Product/acid ratios of 10:20 can be attained in the reaction of benzophenone oximes.

In the presence of catalytic amounts of RhH(CO)(PPh3)3 and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppBz), acyl groups were transferred between benzyl ketones and thioesters/aryl esters. The rhodium complex catalyzed the cleavage of ketone CO-C bonds and intermolecular rearrangement giving unsymmetric ketones. The acyl-transfer reaction also occurred with 1-(p-chlorophenyl)-3-(p-cyanophenyl)propane-2-one giving unsymmetric ketones.
