Esta é uma revisão literária cujo objeto central de estudo é a pandemia da COVID-19, doença causada pelo vírus nomeado como SARS-CoV-2. A pandemia teve início em meados do ano 2020, após a infestação do vírus na China no ano de 2019. Em menos de um ano, mais de 200 mil pessoas já haviam sido infectadas e, mesmo após dois anos, ainda são muitas as dúvidas relacionadas à doença. Desta forma, foi realizada esta revisão da literatura com o objetivo de reunir e sintetizar as informações de artigos, periódicos e outras fontes. Foi realizada uma análise qualitativa, por meio do método exploratório, com lapso temporal da bibliografia de três anos, pois foi baseado na duração da pandemia da COVID-19. O objetivo central determinado para nortear a revisão da literatura foi o de reunir e sintetizar as informações relacionadas ao coronavirus. O controle da doença, inicialmente, foi realizado por meio de medidas de prevenção como o isolamento social, o uso de máscara e higienização constante tanto das mãos quanto das superfícies dos ambientes, pois a principal via de transmissão ocorre por meio de secreções oronasais. Atualmente existem medicamentos aprovados pela Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA) para o tratamento da COVID-19 e diversas vacinas desenvolvidas, além de uma expressiva diminuição nos casos e na letalidade da doença. No entanto, existe a necessidade de que pesquisas continuem sendo desenvolvidas e que os estudos avancem no sentido de fornecer a erradicação completa da doença, a fim de que não ocorram novos casos e de que a pandemia não volte ao auge.
