Juvenile sex offenders (JSOs) often appear unmotivated to change, which thus necessitates a therapeutic approach that matches “resistant” client characteristics. In this article, the authors review common traits of JSOs, introduce motivational counseling as an effective treatment modality, and offer a case illustration.
An abundance of research literature exists on challenges faced and emotional responses in parents of children with special needs. However, the end users of this research, which many can argue should be the parents and their families, are all too familiar with these stressors and challenges. This article provides parents and the counselors concrete information on what has worked for those parents of children with special needs that have adjusted well. Four domains are identified (Social Support, Positive Coping Skills, Family and Marital Adjustment, and Effective Parenting), and a Comprehensive Clinical Intervention Model is presented that provides counselors guidance to integrate these domains in a comprehensive treatment approach.
This article profiles the Court Care Center for Divorcing Families, a divorce education intervention program currently being implemented in the Ninth Judicial Circuit in Orange County. Florida. This program is based on a descriptive model designed by Blaisure and Geasler. The Court Care Center is positioned within the courthouse and offers multilevel interventions designed to address the educational and emotional needs of families going through the transition of divorce. The Court Case Center is a result of a collaborative effort of mental health professionals, judges, and Orange County government. The Court Care Center offers crisis counseling, high‐conflict group intervention, skills‐based parent education for divorcing parents, and a referral base for divorcing families as a support to the domestic court.
