Official mortality information was supplied by the State Data Analysis Sy s t e m . C o mp a ra t i ve analysis used analogous information for physicians and engineers. Analysis of death distribution according to underlying causes indicated the absence of significant differe n c e s that might suggest increased risk of death for dentists as compared to physicians and engin e e r s . De n t i s t s' deaths did not present worse indications for global and specific categories of infectious diseases, n e o p l a s m s , s u i c i d e , o r c e n t ral nervous system or circ u l a t o ry diseases. A systematic excess mortality caused by injuries was observed for engineers, especially in t ra f f i c -related accidents, accidental falls, a n d other accidents. We observed the absence of significant discrepancies indicating work -a ttributable risk for dentists. This observa t i o n suggests that dentistry can be considered a safe p ro f e s s i o n , at least re g a rding ex p o s u re to systematic risk of death.
