This paper presents a systematic design for a fully operational portable electrocardiogram (ECG) system for training and educational purposes in Biomedical Engineering (BME) curriculum courses. The proposed ECG system also includes heart rate variability (HRV) analysis using LabVIEW, as well as step-by-step methods for the hardware and software design consideration. The instrumentation is developed to interface as a shield for an Arduino Uno. Furthermore, the study of the ECG signal includes acquisition of a real-time ECG signal, signal filtering and processing. ECG feature extraction is based on the wavelet transform for HRV analysis in LabVIEW. The proposed system has been tested with the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and was able to achieve a sensitivity of 93.5%. Researchers will develop a valuable toolkit in the process of designing this system, and if the system is further developed to meet clinical standards, it could have major applications in less accessible areas.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
