This service evaluation aimed to explore the experiences of people with learning disabilities and their carers who accessed community dental services. Adults with learning disabilities (n=4) and their carers (n=6) took part in one to one, face to face semi structured interviews.Generally, participants were satisfied with community dental services and in particular valued the skills and the competence of practitioners. However, when dissatisfaction was expressed this was generally as a result of poor communication and the transition from child to adult dental services. Conclusions are discussed and recommendations are identified.
The goal of Study 1 was to investigate whether young Canadian adults were interested in becoming involved in palliative care volunteer work. After reading a brief description of what volunteering in a palliative care environment typically involves, participants (undergraduate students) were asked to indicate whether they would be interested in this kind of volunteer experience and to provide a written explanation of their answer. Of the 105 participating students, only 39 (37.1 percent) expressed an interest in volunteering, while 66 (62.9 percent) were not interested. Not surprisingly, the results revealed that significantly more females than males were interested in palliative care volunteer work (45.9 percent and 25.0 percent, respectively). The most common reason students gave for wanting to become a palliative care volunteer was to help others; the reason given most often for not wanting to volunteer was that it would be too emotionally demanding. It is important to note that prior to taking part in this study the majority of the participating students (75.9 percent) did not know what palliative care was. The goal of Study 2 was to investigate undergraduate students' interest in volunteering in a nursing home, in a classroom, and at a food bank. Of the 111 participating students, 74 (66.7 percent) expressed an interest in volunteering at a food bank and in a nursing home, and 89 (80.2 percent) were interested in becoming a classroom volunteer. Together, the results of Studies 1 and 2 support the view that young people in Canada (especially males) are not interested in becoming involved in the care of dying persons. However, the results also indicate that they are very interested in volunteering with other populations (e.g., the elderly, school children) and in other settings (e.g., food bank).
The development of a motion imagery (MI) quality scale, akin to the National Image Interpretibility Rating Scale (NIIRS) for still imagery, would have great value to designers and users of surveillance and other MI systems. A multiphase study has adopted a perceptual approach to identifying the main MI attributes that affect interpretibility. The current perceptual study measured frame rate effects for simple motion imagery interpretation tasks of detecting and identifying a known target. By using synthetic imagery, there was full control of the contrast and speed of moving objects, motion complexity, the number of confusers, and the noise structure. To explore the detectibility threshold, the contrast between the darker moving objects and the background was set at 5%, 2%, and 1%. Nine viewers were to detect or identify a moving synthetic "bug" in each of 288 10-second clip. We found that frame rate, contrast, and confusers had a statistically significant effect on image interpretibility (at the 95% level), while the speed and background showed no significant effect. Generally, there was a significant loss in correct detection and identification for frame rates below 10 F/s. Increasing the contrast improved detection and at high contrast, confusers did not affect detection. Confusers reduced detection of higher speed objects. Higher speed improved detection, but complicated identification, although this effect was small. Higher speed made detection harder at 1 Frame/s, but improved detection at 30 F/s. The low loss of quality at moderately lower frame rates may have implications for bandwidth limited systems. A study is underway to confirm, with live action imagery, the results reported here with synthetic.
The Video National Imagery Interpretability Rating Standard (V-NIIRS) consists of a ranked set of subjective criteria to assist analysts in assigning an interpretability quality level to a motion imagery clip. The V-NIIRS rating standard is needed to support the tasking, retrieval, and exploitation of motion imagery. A criteria survey was conducted to yield individual pair-wise criteria rankings and scores. Statistical analysis shows good agreement with expectations across the 9-levels of interpretability, for each of the 7 content domains.
Background Hypernatraemia is associated with morbidity and mortality, particularly in the older person. Last summer, Ireland experienced prolonged periods of excessive heat. The Irish meteorological service defines a heatwave as temperatures exceeding 25°C for five consecutive days. Aim This study sought to compare the frequency of hypernatraemia (sodium (Na+) >145 mmol/l) observed during a modest heatwave with that during average ambient temperature in the temperate Irish climate. Design Retrospective cross-sectional analysis with nested case–control study. Methods The 10-day period from 24 June to 3 July in 2017 and 2018 were chosen as the control and heatwave periods, respectively. Patients aged >65 with at least one Na+ value recorded on the laboratory information system were included. Local meteorological data, age, gender and Na+ levels were evaluated. Results Maximum air temperatures were significantly higher during the heatwave period (mean 27°C vs. 16.8°C, P < 0.0001). Hypernatraemia was present in 3.6% (66/1840) of samples collected during the heatwave compared to 1.4% (23/1593) in the control period. The mean age of affected patients was similar in both groups, 75 years ±7 (P = 1.000). Almost half of participants (49.5%) were male. The frequency of hypernatraemia observed was not influenced by gender, P = 0.33. The median sodium concentrations were similar in both groups, P = 1.00. Conclusion Hypernatraemia was 2.5 times more frequent in samples drawn during the heatwave compared to the control period. In this study, neither age nor gender impacted the profile of patients diagnosed with hypernatraemia. A modest rise in temperatures increases hypernatraemia rates in temperate climates.
Purpose -Despite the surge of interest in construction sustainability and the many Government initiatives encouraging reform in the UK construction industry (CI), the prevalence of sustainable development (SD) in the industry is still largely lagging behind that of other industries. Given the amount of focus and activity identified nationally in this area, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the reasons why this is not being translated into action and to seek counsel from industry professionals as to how they believe change can be achieved with a particular focus on how they believe higher education institutions (HEIs) can contribute. Design/methodology/approach -An explorative, qualitative study using three focus groups was of construction professionals. Findings -Despite a lack of action, many in industry support sustainability and actively attempt to engage in sustainable practices but a number of barriers preclude successful implementation. Government initiatives are having a positive impact, with participants believing that both Government and HEIs are imperative in driving the sustainability agenda forward. Research limitations/implications -Whilst limited in scale, this paper highlights the current state of the CI in relation to SD and evidences that progress is being made albeit slowly. The findings may help both Government and HEIs alongside industry in achieving how this can be overcome. Originality/value -Previous research in this area has generally adopted a quantitative approach. Adopting a qualitative approach provides a more in depth view as to why the status quo remains with regards to SD in the CI.
