Brain lesion studies currently employ techniques such as computed tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, single photon emission tomography and positron emission tomography. Famous neuropsychologist Alexander Romanovich Luria’s studies on cognition were conducted without the use of imaging technology for many years, in a large number of patients with brain lesions, and explored complex behavior and specific brain functions involving the lobes and subareas. For instance, he carried out several specific studies on memory and mental organization, reported in his books. The objective of this study is to associate recent studies in neuropsychology with Luria’s work specifically on the temporal lobe. According to the data studied, Luria’s epistemological foundation remains the basis for neuropsychological studies today, but new data on the temporal lobe in relation to epilepsy and hippocampus analysis have been introduced into the scope of neuropsychology. This study focuses on earlier data from Luria’s studies on the neuropsychological functions of the temporal lobe, comparing these with more recent data. However, in order to improve clinical aspects, a detailed study on the neuropsychological tests used for the temporal lobe should be performed.
As life expectancy increases worldwide, so does the time available for prolonged exposure to toxic materials in the environment that have the potential to exert gradual pressure, facilitating the onset of aging in the body. Neural/behavioral alterations are linked to age gain, making the understanding of the aging process more complex considering the high complexity of the neural system and, although neuropsychological, pathological and neuroimaging criteria have been established to differentiate between normal and pathological aging, diagnosing the mild cognitive problems of each elderly individual remains a challenge. Parkinson's disease is recognized as one of the most common neurological disorders in the elderly, whose intrinsic cause is still unknown, but its main molecular basis is the decrease in dopamine produced in the substantia nigra. Studies have suggested that exposure to organophosphate, the glyphosate class, in different organisms, are capable of promoting bodily malformations, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, genotoxicity, metabolic disorders, among others. The effects of pesticides on the environment, associated with their exacerbated permanence in the environment, indicate that more and more people may suffer their deleterious action, which may be the cause of some neurodegenerative disorders. The main objective of this study was to use specific data from the literature on Parkinsonism, correlating it with aging and contamination by pesticides. In fact, the health risks inherent in the use of pesticides are greater the greater the intensity of exposure to them and, considering the widespread use of pesticides today, the number of poisoning of the human population and animals will increase. Therefore, in terms of literary data, contamination with pesticides may be associated with a public health problem and, therefore, a possible increase in dementia processes, thus Parkinsonism.
Metal explants from orthopedic surgical therapy are classified as solid waste with a potential risk for contamination. Objective: To analyze the literature on how environmental management occurs in hospitals through the disposal of waste from orthopedic metallic explants. Methodology: This research was an applied, practical, quantitative, experimental, exploratory, empirical, and cross-sectional study with the investigative objective of confirming the hypotheses. The research was carried out in all Brazilian States, in public and private hospitals considered as references for the treatment of orthopedics and traumatology. Three distinct groups were compared: Brazilian hospitals certified by ISO 14 001; hospitals with ONA accreditation with a level of excellence; and non-certified hospitals, using the inductive method. Main findings: The explants must be registered and controlled in order to be recycled, which is a step included in the health waste management plan (PGRSS). However, their final destination is a large-scale problem due to obstacles in law application created by economic issues. When it comes to the recycling of surgical explants, stainless steel can be completely reused, for instance. Main conclusions: In Brazil, there are limited data regarding the number of generators or the amount of waste produced from health services, and, additionally, explants are improperly discarded as sharps waste.
