The aim of this article is to study changes in settlement patterns in the Early and Middle Neolithic of the Paris Basin, using data on site location. The study thus contributes to a better understanding of the broad sequence of events in an area where environmental evidence is generally quite scarce. The approach is based on multivariate statistical analysis. A wide range of spatial criteria on site location is exploited. Period by period, the results show episodes of expansion and contraction, involving regional specificities as well as some long-standing choices. This study also provides the basis for a more general reflection on the quantitative treatment of spatial databases in archaeology at a time when geographic information systems are being increasingly used.
