O artigo trata das narrativas dos padres Pierre-François-Xavier de Charlevoix, D. José Vaisseste e de Gaspar da Madre de Deus construídas para os sertanistas paulistas entre 1756 e 1774. Procura-se entender como essas construções discursivas exaltavam ou negavam as ações “sertanistas” a partir de sensibilidades opostas, o ufanismo e o ressentimento, na construção da identidade nacional.Essas sensibilidades reforçaram os vínculos entre os cidadãos e a nação e estimularam o hábito de supervalorizá-la excessivamente. Este modelo de história exultou os heróis e reverenciou a natureza.
