(…) Mimo przyjęcia islamu bardzo trudno powiedzieć coś ścisłego o przynależności cywilizacyjnej ludzi zamieszkujących Azję Środkową. Określenie takie pojawia się, gdy ludy te (…) stanęły w wieku XIX i XX wobec presji kolonialnej Rosji. (…) Klęska w starciu z rewolucją rosyjską wydawała się definitywnym kresem cywilizacji ludów Azji Środkowej. A jednak po rozpadzie Związku Radzieckiego ujawnia się tam trwające w głębi poczucie odrębności 1 . "Cud rozmnożenia", który dokonał się w grudniu 1991 roku, oznaczał daleko więcej niż pojawienie się kilkunastu nowych stolic na mapie politycznej Eurazji. Jednym z najdonioślejszych następstw rozpadu Związku Socjalistycznych Republik Sowieckich była postępująca regionalizacja zajmowanego przezeń gigantycznego, bo liczącego ponad 22 mln km² powierzchni, terytorium 2 . Granice Rosji -naturalnego (oraz prawnomiędzynarodowego) następcy komunistycznego mocarstwa -przesunęły się daleko na północ i wschód względem rubieży ZSRS. Pozostałe organizmy polityczne zajęły z kolei miejsce republik związkowych usytuowanych "wyspowo" wzdłuż zachodnich i południowych obrzeży byłego imperium 3 . Łączące je dotychczas więzi polityczne i ekonomiczne, ukształtowane w ramach jednego państwa, uległy naturalnemu osłabieniu z uwagi na 1
