Abstract.A structured procedure is presented to identify similar processes producing similar features on different products in small batch and job production processes. Similar processes are clustered together to achieve the minimum necessary amount of samples to monitor and control the respective production process using statistical process control (SPC). It is described how the procedure was successfully applied to a process in the manufacturing of boring/milling machines. Keywords: SPC / process control / small batches / reward / quality management
Implications and influencesThe structured procedure described here is a first step towards the application of SPC using a process cluster approach. Future work will provide an algorithm that allows to automatically identify homogeneous clusters based on historical process data.
This paper presents an approach for the selection of methods for the proof of capability of measurement processes according to the risk connected to a false decision. High risks demand more reliable and therefore cost-intensive methods, a low risk allowing for cost-efficient methods with lower reliability. This approach, which is incorporated into the upcoming guideline VDI/VDE 2600-1, allows manufacturers to reduce efforts and costs associated with measurement process evaluation according to the risks and consequences of erroneous decisions deriving from measurement results. To be able to decide for the economically optimal measurement process solution, a cost model for the processes described in the VDI/VDE 2600-1 is presented.
Many standards and guidelines demand a proof of capability for inspection processes. In this article procedures and methods for reducing the costs for the proof of capability are presented. At first, the handling of many inspection processes using a risk-based approach is described. Second, a structured, model-based approach for the proof of capability of complex inspection processes is outlined. Both topics are part of the VDI/VDE 2600 guideline series.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
