The SJ equation is a slightly more accurate equation than that derived from CMJ data. This equation should be used in the determination of peak power in place of the formulas developed by both Harman et al. and Lewis. Separate equations for males and females are unnecessary.
The Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) is a public resource that promotes understanding about the interaction of environmental chemicals with gene products, and their effects on human health. Biocurators at CTD manually curate a triad of chemical–gene, chemical–disease and gene–disease relationships from the literature. These core data are then integrated to construct chemical–gene–disease networks and to predict many novel relationships using different types of associated data. Since 2009, we dramatically increased the content of CTD to 1.4 million chemical–gene–disease data points and added many features, statistical analyses and analytical tools, including GeneComps and ChemComps (to find comparable genes and chemicals that share toxicogenomic profiles), enriched Gene Ontology terms associated with chemicals, statistically ranked chemical–disease inferences, Venn diagram tools to discover overlapping and unique attributes of any set of chemicals, genes or disease, and enhanced gene pathway data content, among other features. Together, this wealth of expanded chemical–gene–disease data continues to help users generate testable hypotheses about the molecular mechanisms of environmental diseases. The effect of anatomic variation on the risk of overuse injuries has not been adequately evaluated. To determine the association of several common anatomic characteristics (genu varum, genu valgum, genu recurvatum, and lower limb length differences) with risk of overuse injury, we made prospective morphologic measurements of young men prior to beginning 12 week of Army infantry training. The training included frequent running, marching, calisthenics, and other vigorous activities. Lower extremity anatomic landmarks were high-lighted, and front- and side-view photographic slides were taken of the 294 study volunteers. The slides were compute digitized, and the following measures calculated: pelvic width to knee width ratio (to assess genu valgum/varum), quadriceps angle (Q-angle), knee angle at full extension, and lower limb length differences. The cumulative incidence of lower limb overuse injury was 30%. Relative risk of (RR) of overuse injury was significantly higher among participants with the most valgus knees (RR = 1.9). Those with Q-angle of more than 15 degrees had significantly increased risk specifically for stress fractures (RR = 5.4). Anatomic characteristics were associated with several other types of injuries, including pain and nonacute muscle strain due to overuse. This pilot study provides evidence that some lower limb morphologic characteristics may place individuals at increased risk of overuse injuries.
Current models of psychological development rely heavily on connectionist models that use supervised learning. These models adapt network weights when the network output does not match the target outputs computed by some agent. The authors present a model of motor learning in which the child uses exploration to discover appropriate ways of responding. The model is consistent with what is known about how neural systems evaluate behavior. The authors model the development of reaching and investigate N. Bernstein's (1967) hypotheses about early motor learning. Simulations show the course of learning as well as model the kinematics of reaching by a dynamical arm.
