Purpose
Industry 4.0 is the present trend in automation and data exchange in organizations. However, till today, there is no generic and common understanding in terms of assessing the Industry 4.0 readiness for organizations. The purpose of this paper is to identify the key ingredients for assessing Industry 4.0 readiness for organizations, the interrelationships that exist between these readiness factors and how future research should proceed given the research findings.
Design/methodology/approach
A systematic literature review (SLR) methodology of Tranfield et al. (2003) was employed to ensure the replicability and transparency of the review process. Altogether, 68 articles were identified for the final thematic analysis.
Findings
The SLR results generated six broad themes of readiness factors. The interrelationship mechanism between these factors was identified. In addition, 17 research propositions were elucidated.
Research limitations/implications
Being the first literature review on assessing Industry 4.0 readiness for organizations, it finds 17 research propositions which will give the future researchers a guideline for further research in Industry 4.0.
Practical implications
Although Industry 4.0 is the buzzword, very few organizations understand the concept in detail. This paper will help the organizations to identify the factors which they have to asses critically before implementing Industry 4.0 in an organization.

Nevertheless, there has been a lot of research on Industry 4.0; this is the first systematic literature to identify the key ingredients for assessing Industry 4.0 readiness for organizations.
PurposeQuality 4.0 is concerned with managing quality in the Industry 4.0 era. Specifically, its focus is on which digital tools are used to enhance an organization’s ability to reliably give customers high-quality products. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the key ingredients for the effective implementation of Quality 4.0.Design/methodology/approachA narrative literature review was conducted on the extant works to collate and analyse previous studies in this relatively new field.FindingsThe study revealed eight key ingredients for the effective implementation of Quality 4.0 in organizations, namely: (1) handling big data, (2) improving prescriptive analytics, (3) using Quality 4.0 for effective vertical, horizontal and end-to-end integration, (4) using Quality 4.0 for strategic advantage, (5) leadership in Quality 4.0, (6) training in Quality 4.0, (7) organizational culture for Quality 4.0 and, lastly, (8) top management support for Quality 4.0. These findings have provided a steer for the future research agenda of Quality 4.0.Practical implicationsOrganizations can use the eight ingredients to perform a self-assessment on the current state of each element within their own organization. When implementing Quality 4.0, each ingredient should be effectively analysed, and measures taken so that the implementation of Quality 4.0 is effective.Originality/valueThe paper makes the first attempt to present the key ingredients an organization should possess to effectively implement Quality 4.0.
Lean Management (LM) is one of the most widely used business strategies for the last three decades. Industry 4.0 shows all the promise of the fourth industrial revolution using automation technologies like cyber-physical systems, internet of things and cloud computing. The purpose of this paper is to propose an integration model of Industry 4.0 and LM. A summary literature review of Industry 4.0 and LM is carried out to construct a theoretical model of integration. The previous literature is used to develop and propose an integration model of Industry 4.0 and LM. The horizontal, vertical and end-to-end engineering integration model are integrated with LM methodology. Testable research propositions are proposed between Industry 4.0 and LM. The model proposed is novel and it raises the important issue of integration of LM with Industry 4.0. This is the first paper which proposes the integration framework of LM with Industry 4.0.
