Based on the assessment by 81 experts of a two-round Delphi Survey conducted in 1996, the article compares such characterstics of technological areas as new materials, optics, software, and biotechnology. The investigation focuses on innovation in NTBFs. Confronting the results with the potential of start-ups advice for technology policies and consulting are derived.
