This study investigated grief reactions and coping strategies of in-school adolescents faced with parental loss in Ilorin, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive design of the survey method. Two hundred in-school adolescents were drawn using simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. A questionnaire tagged "Grief Reactions and Coping Strategies Questionnaire (GRCSQ) was used for the research. The instrument possessed a reliability coefficient of 0.82 which was established through the test retest method. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were generated and tested using the measure of central tendency and ttest statistical tool respectively. The result revealed that in-school adolescents faced with parental loss experienced series of grief reactions such as anxiety, nervousness, fear, nightmare and shock. These in-school adolescents faced with parental loss have low coping abilities. İt was further revealed that there is no significant difference in the grief reactions to parental loss and coping strategies among in-school adolescents based on gender. The researchers recommended that counsellors should constantly organize grief counselling for in-school adolescents who have lost their parents; grief therapy programme which could help to manage various levels of grief reaction among students should be coordinated by the counsellors and help-giving professionals.
This study examined the psychosocial problems of rape in Ilorin South of Kwara State. A descriptive survey design was employed in the study. The population consisted of parents in Ilorin South of Kwara State, with a sample of two hundred and twenty respondents being selected through a multistage sampling method. A researcher designed instrument tagged ‘Psychosocial Problems of Rape Questionnaire (PPRQ)’ was used to collect data. The instrument was well validated by experts in test and measurement. Reliability was ascertained through a test retest method which yielded a reliability co-efficient of 0.77. One research question and four hypotheses guided the study. Data was analysed with mean and rank order, t-test and Analysis of variance. Hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that the psychosocial problems of rape include: an inferiority complex, a feeling of being unsafe, a low self-esteem, depression, emotional stress, social withdrawal, among other problems. Findings also showed that age, gender and religion did not influence the respondents or their responses on the problems of rape, while they differed in their responses based on their educational level. Based on the findings, it was recommended as follows: government should set up serious measures to tackle incidences of rape in schools and punish the rapists severely, and schools should, through counselling, educate the students on how to avoid being victims of rape. Schools should also be fenced all round.
The upsurge in the use of cyberspace in recent years has led to pathological use for some individuals especially in the area of cyber relational addiction. This study aimed to investigate the influence of cyber relational addiction on interpersonal relationships and how variables of age, religion, levels of study, and gender of respondents moderate the influence of cyber relational addiction on their interpersonal relationships. This study employed a descriptive survey research design and administered a self-designed questionnaire on 420 randomly selected undergraduates from seven faculties at the University of Ilorin. A research question was answered in this study, while the hypotheses were also tested at 0.05 levels of significance. The varying collected data were analyzed using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical methods. Undergraduate students’ sources of information were mostly from the Internet than interacting with people, and they believed gaining more academically online than interacting with people. Meanwhile, the results were not varied based on the respondents’ age, levels of study, religion, and gender. It is necessary to develop a sound and wide range of activities that will reduce cyber relation addiction, which in turn promote psychological wellbeing among undergraduates. Interpersonal relationship skills training should be conducted for cyber-addicted adolescents to observe its impacts on cyber relational addiction. Abstrak: Meningkatnya penggunaan ruang siber dalam beberapa tahun terakhir mengakibatkan tingginya penggunaan patologis ruang siber, terutama pada area kecanduan untuk berinteraksi melalui ruang siber. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki dampak dari kecanduan untuk berhubungan melalui ruang siber terhadap hubungan interpersonal, serta bagaimana variable usia, agama, tingkat pendidikan, dan jenis kelamin memoderasi hubungan kecanduan ruang siber dan hubungan interpersonal. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain survei deskriptif dan kuesioner yang dirancang sendiri lalu disebarkan kepada 420 mahasiswa sarjana dari tujuh fakultas dari University of Ilorin, secara acak. Penelitian ini berfokus untuk menjawab sebuah rumusan masalah yang telah diuji pada 0.05 tingkat signifikansi. Data-data yang telah terkumpul diuji menggunakan beberapa uji statistik berupa Uji t dan Analisis of Variance (ANOVA). Hasil dari analisis data menunjukkan bahwa kebanyakan mahasiswa mencari informasi melalui interaksi pada ruang siber. Sedangkan hasil dari analisis pada variabel usia, tingkat pendidikan, agama, dan jenis kelamin menunjukkan hasil yang sama. Sehingga kita perlu mengembangkan berbagai kegiatan untuk mengurangi kecanduan berinteraksi menggunakan ruang siber, yang nantinya akan meningkatkan kondisi psikologis para mahasiswa. Selain itu, pelatihan keterampilan yang berhubungan dengan hubungan interpersonal harus juga diselenggarakan untuk mengetahui dampaknya pada para remaja dengan kecanduan untuk berinteraksi di ruang siber.
In Nigeria, there are issues of insecurity, disintegration, lawlessness and heightened corruption among others. Issues of this nature need the role of counsellors when stakeholders are formulating policies for national integration. Hence, it is on this premise that this study investigated the role of counsellors in promoting National integration in Nigeria. The research design adopted for the study was the descriptive survey type. A multistage sampling procedure was adopted in selecting the respondents that participated in the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 460 respondents for the study. The instrument used in gathering the required data was a self-developed questionnaire titled "Role of Counsellors in Promoting National Integration Questionnaire" (RCNIQ). Three null hypotheses were generated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance using t-test statistical tool. The result obtained revealed that there was significant difference in the role of counsellors in promoting National integration based on gender, educational qualification and length of years in service. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that more school counsellors should enlighten the students on the need for unity and integration among Nigerians. Seminars and workshops should be organized by counsellors in collaboration with the government, Non-Governmental Organizations and other stakeholders in order to discuss and tackle contemporary issues on National integration and stability.
