El objetivo del estudio fue realizar un análisis de rentabilidad de la producción de maíz en el Distrito de Desarrollo de Tulancingo, Hidalgo. Se realizó una encuesta dirigida a 55 productores, considerando variables de carácter cuantitativo y cualitativo, de mayo a septiembre de 2010. Se identificaron tres categorías de productores según su rendimiento: categoría I: rendimiento £ 1 t ha-1, (24 % de los productores); categoría II: de 1.1 a 2 t ha-1, (72%) y categoría III: ≥ 2.1 (4%). Algunos de los problemas que enfrentaban eran: sequía (96% mencionó que la falta de agua limita la producción); reducido uso de semilla mejorada (28 % la utiliza); control fitosanitario deficiente (sólo 4 % lo realiza); 24 % aplica herbicidas; y 60 % fertiliza, evidenciando un bajo nivel tecnológico. Lo anterior, por la falta de asesoría técnica y capacitación. Los costos de producción promedio fueron de $7290.19 por ha, con un rendimiento de 1.87 t ha-1, lo que permite obtener ganancias de $83.15 por ha. Los productores de categoría III tienen una ganancia de $1067.80 por tonelada, mientras que los de categoría I registran pérdidas de $2416.50, lo que se explica por los bajos rendimientos.
El uso de semilla de calidad para la producción de maíz (Zea mays L.) constituye una de las inversiones más rentables para el agricultor y justifica ampliamente la investigación en técnicas adecuadas para generarla. La elección del patrón de siembra (PS) de los progenitores en la producción de semilla híbrida de maíz es importante para lograr un equilibrio entre rendimiento y calidad de semilla. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar el efecto del PS sobre la calidad física y fisiológica de la semilla del híbrido de maíz H-135. Se evaluaron cinco PS en cuanto a relación hembra-macho, cuatro compactos (PSC) 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1 y el testigo convencional (6:2); además, se estudió el efecto de tres tamaños (grande, mediana y chica) y dos formas (plana y redonda) de semilla. El experimento se realizó bajo un diseño completamente al azar con arreglo factorial. Los resultados mostraron diferencias significativas (P ≤ 0.05) entre PS en la expresión del peso volumétrico (PV), germinación total (GT) y vigor (VS). El mayor VS se obtuvo con el PSC 8:1 (P ≤ 0.05). Entre formas de semilla se encontraron diferencias en VS, GT y peso de mil semillas (PMS). La semilla redonda superó a la plana en 13 % (P ≤ 0.05) en PMS; sin embargo, la semilla plana fue superior a la redonda en 6 % en VS. El tamaño de la semilla afectó significativamente el PMS, PV y GT. En PV, la semilla mediana presentó la media más alta (76.1 kg hL-1). La semilla grande fue superior (94.4 %) en GT, mientras que las medianas y chicas presentaron germinación de 93.7 y 91.8 %, respectivamente. Los mejores resultados se obtuvieron con los PSC 4:1 y 8:1, y con la semilla de forma plana y tamaño grande.
El maíz (Zea mays L.) es componente esencial de la dieta de los mexicanos, con un consumo per capita promedio de 120 kg al año. En este documento se analiza la importancia de la conservación del maíz tunicado (Zea mays var. tunicata A. St. Hil.), maíz ajo, como lo llaman en el pueblo otomí de San Juan Ixtenco, Tlaxcala, México. En esta comunidad el maíz ajo ha sido resguardado durante décadas por un reducido número de familias. En 2009 se inicia el rescate y una preservación más amplia del maíz ajo. Los objetivos del presente estudio fue conocer el modo de vida de las familias que han preservado este tipo de maíz, así como comprender los códigos culturales que rodean la preservación de los productores y el rol que juegan los integrantes de la familia en las labores agrícolas. El estudio fue etnográfico y realizado de septiembre de 2012 a marzo de 2013 mediante entrevistas a campesinos e informantes clave. Los resultados permitieron determinar qué hacen, dicen y piensan en función de sus rasgos culturales y sociales en torno al cultivo del maíz ajo. La trascendencia de este tipo de maíz es que ha subsistido por miles de años y conservado sus principales características, generando la misma producción y coexistiendo con otros maíces criollos. Una de las conclusiones apunta a la necesidad de apoyar el esfuerzo de la comunidad y su riqueza cultural para seguir preservando el maíz ajo. Los pobladores de San Juan Ixtenco, a través de la feria del maíz y de custodios mantienen el intercambio de éste y de otros tipos de maíz con otros grupos de productores. El Estado mexicano debe revalorar la importancia cultural y simbólica que este grano ha representado por miles de años y desarrollar políticas públicas para su preservación.
México es centro de origen del maíz y por lo tanto, tiene la vital importancia de conservar el germoplasma y mantener la diversidad genética de este cultivo ante cualquier presencia de plagas y enfermedades o de otro tipo de fenómenos naturales que acaban con las variedades dominantes que suelen sembrarse en otros países. En México se siembra una gran diversidad de variedades de este cereal. El maíz palomero es catalogado de los más antiguos y en la actualidad se encuentra en peligro de extinción. Las palomitas de maíz tienen altos contenidos de fibra, vitaminas, minerales, proteínas y antioxidantes, además ayudan a disminuir el colesterol y a controlar la diabetes. Por lo cual, es de gran importancia establecer un protocolo estándar del método de reventado de palomitas de maíz, que permita realizar las evaluaciones de los genotipos de manera consistente en los diferentes programas de mejoramiento genético. En este trabajo se evaluó la influencia del genotipo, tamaño de muestra, tiempo de exposición a las microondas, y humedad del grano sobre las características de reventado de dos genotipos de maíz palomero, un comercial amarillo y un híbrido experimental. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en las variables evaluadas. El genotipo comercial obtuvo el mayor volumen de expansión (27.11 cm3), utilizando 2:45 min en el microondas, y con una humedad de 12%; mientras que en el genotipo híbrido se recomienda utilizar 2:30 min y una humedad de 13%, para obtener el mayor volumen de expansión (9.48 cm3).
En América Latina, aproximadamente la mitad de mujeres rurales en edad de trabajar no cuenta con ingreso propio; este escenario no es diferente en México, lo anterior tiene sus orígenes en la asignación de comportamientos de modelado de los roles femeninos. En los últimos años la aportación de las mujeres en los hogares en muy importante para atenuar la pobreza, ya que en las zonas rurales la cooperatividad de las mujeres es importante en las actividades agrícolas y pecuarias como un complemento al ingreso familiar. El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la importancia de la comercialización de las hierbas aromáticas en los mercados sobre ruedas y conocer las propiedades de cada una de las plantas, así como comprender la colaboración de mujeres en el crecimiento económico de las comunidades rurales. En el año 2019 se realizaron 35 entrevistas diseñadas para las mujeres comercializadoras de hierbas aromáticas en los mercados sobre ruedas. Dichas entrevistas fueron aplicadas en Amecameca, Estado de México. Los datos fueron analizados con estadística descriptiva y se diseñó un sistema de mercadeo/comercialización. Las conclusiones refieren que los mercados sobre ruedas son áreas o espacios geográficos en el cual se desarrollan los vínculos comunitarios y económicos para la manutención e ingresos familiares adicionales a través de la comercialización de hierbas aromáticas, la cual es realizada por mujeres rurales. La labor de estas mujeres rurales ha sido transmitida a través de generaciones (por lo menos tres generaciones), principalmente a las hijas, implementadas por los usos y costumbres del municipio de Amecameca. La actividad del mercadeo de hierbas aromáticas se presenta solamente entre el mismo género.
