Solvent effect is a vital subject in the domain of coordination chemistry. In this connection, previous researches mainly focus on the role of solvents in reaction kinetics and thermodynamics during the coordination processes. In virtue of the recent efforts on coordination supramolecular systems, especially coordination polymers or metal-organic frameworks, this feature article aims to demonstrate the solvent effect on regulating such diversiform metallosupramolecular solids, incorporating their crystal growth/assembly, structural modulation, dynamic transformations, and potential applications, which may provide new insights into the rational design and construction of such advanced crystalline materials.

Selective adsorption and separation of CO2 are of great importance for different target applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a promising class of porous materials for this purpose. Here we present a unique MOF material, [Cu(tba)2]n (tba = 4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)benzoate), which shows high CO2 adsorption selectivity over CH4/H2/O2/Ar/N2 gases (with IAST selectivity of 41-68 at 273 K and 33-51 at 293 K). By using a critical point dryer, the CO2 molecules can be well sealed in the 1D channels of [Cu(tba)2]n to allow a single-crystal X-ray analysis, which reveals the presence of not only C(δ+)-H···O(δ-) bonds between the host framework and CO2 but also quadrupole-quadrupole (CO2(δ-)···(δ+)CO2) interactions between the CO2 molecules. Furthermore, [Cu(tba)2]n will suffer divergent kinetic and thermodynamic hydration processes to form its isostructural hydrate {[Cu(tba)2](H2O)}n and a mononuclear complex [Cu(tba)2(H2O)4] via single-crystal to single-crystal transformations.

The template-directed synthesis of a novel luminescent Tb-MOF material which could serve as a multi-responsive probe for sensing Fe3+ and Al3+ ions in water, as well as p-xylene and nitrobenzene in the vapor state is presented here.

To systematically explore the higher-dimensional network structures with mixed connectivity, a series of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unusual (3,6)-connected net topologies are presented. These crystalline materials include [{[Mn(btza)2(H2O)2].2 H2O}n] (1), [{[Zn(btza)2(H2O)2].2 H2O}n] (2), [{[Cu(btza)2].H2O}n] (3), and [{[Cd(btza)2].3 H2O}n] (4), which have been successfully assembled through a predesigned three-connected organic component bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)acetate (btza) with a variety of octahedral metal cores based on the modular synthetic methodology. The topological paradigms shown in this work cover the 2D CdCl2, 3D (4(2).6)2(4(4).6(2).8(7).10(2)), and pyrite (pyr) types. That is, when properly treated with the familiar first-row divalent metal ions, btza may perfectly furnish the coordination spheres for effective connectivity to result in diverse (3,6)-connected nets. Beyond this, a detailed analysis of network topology for all known 3D (3,6)-connected frameworks in both inorganic and inorganic-organic hybrid materials is described. Specific network connectivity of these MOFs indicates that the metal centers represent the most significant and alterable factor in structural assembly, although they show reliable and similar geometries. In this context, the combination of the distinct d10 AgI ion with btza in different solvents affords two isomorphous MOFs [{[Ag(btza)].glycol}n] (5) and [{[Ag(btza)]CH3OH}n] (6) with a binodal 4-connected 3D SrAl2 (sra) topology. The network structures of MOFs 1-3 and 5 turn out to be more complicated and interesting if one considers the hydrogen bonding between the host coordination frameworks and the intercalated solvent molecules. Furthermore, the role of the included solvents in the generation and stabilization of MOFs 1-6 is also investigated.

A series of nine mixed-ligand metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been prepared by the combination of a bent dipyridyl linker 4-amino-3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole (bpt) and three benzenedicarboxylate isomers (pa = phthalate, ip = isophthalate, and tp = terephthalate), respectively, with different metal ions such as CoII, NiII, CuII, ZnII, and CdII. The framework structures of these neutral polymeric complexes have been determined by the X-ray single-crystal diffraction technique. Structural analysis reveals that the benzenedicarboxylate isomers display versatile coordination modes to manage the metal ions to form 1-D chain or ribbon arrays, which are further extended via the exo-bidentate bpt connectors to give rise to a variety of coordination networks, such as a simple (4,4) layer, 2-D double layer with decorated (4,4) topology, 2-D layer with decorated (3,6) topology, 2-D bilayer with 82.10 topology (2-fold interpenetration), 3-D polythreaded architecture (1-D + 2-D), and 2-fold interpenetrating porous lattice of (4,4) layers. The accessorial secondary interactions such as hydrogen bonding and/or aromatic stacking are also helpful for the extension and stabilization of the final supramolecular aggregates. This work evidently indicates that the isomeric effect of the anionic benzenedicarboxylate is significant in the construction of these network structures, which are also well regulated by the metal centers. The ZnII and CdII MOFs exhibit strong solid-state luminescence emissions at room temperature, which originate differently from intraligand transition or ligand-to-metal charge transfer. Thermal stability of these crystalline materials has been explored by thermogravimetric analysis of mass loss. The 3-D host frameworks of MOFs 8 and 9 show similar porous cavities, and their desorption/adsorption behaviors of guest solvents have also been investigated.

The reactions of 1,4-bis(phenylthio)butane (L) with Ag(I) salts in varied conditions (varying the solvents, metal-to-ligand ratios, and counteranions) lead to the formation of four new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers with different network structures: [Ag(2)L(3)(ClO(4))(2)](infinity) 1, [Ag(2)L(3)(ClO(4))(2) x CH(3)OH](infinity) 2, [[AgL(2)](ClO(4))](infinity) 3, and [AgLNO(3)](infinity) 4. All the structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal data for 1: triclinic, P-1, a = 11.0253(9) A, b = 11.3455(9) A, c = 11.5231(9) A, alpha = 93.931(2) degrees, beta = 92.689(2) degrees, gamma = 112.9810(10) degrees, Z = 2. 2: triclinic, P-1, a = 11.9147(13) A, b = 16.1534(17) A, c = 16.2259(17) A, alpha = 74.977(2) degrees, beta = 69.030(2) degrees, gamma = 69.986(2) degrees, Z = 2. 3: triclinic, P-1, a = 12.1617(9) A, b = 12.5054(10) A, c = 13.1547(10) A, alpha = 64.3370(10) degrees, beta =85.938 (2) degrees, gamma = 69.3010(10) degrees, Z = 2. 4: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 5.4032(17) A, b = 16.974(6) A, c = 19.489(6) A, beta = 94.234(6) degrees, Z = 4. In all four complexes, each Ag(I) center has a tetracoordination geometry, and the 2D networks consist of fused large macrometallacyclic ring systems. The "hexagonal" 42-membered rings, Ag(6)L(6), observed in 1 and 2 are nearly identical, which could be considered as unique examples of self-sustaining noninterpenetrated frameworks formed with flexible ligands. The repeating rectangular 28-membered macrometallacycle, Ag(4)L(4), is the basis for the network of 3, in which the perchlorate anions occupy the voids to prevent the ring from collapsing. In 4, columns of the fused rectangular 22-membered rings, Ag(4)L(2)(NO(3))(2), are cross-linked through the L ligands to form a unique 2D network consisting of two types of 22-membered repeating units.

A terbium (iii) lanthanide–organic framework provides a platform for a recyclable multi-responsive luminescent sensor for detecting Fe3+, MnO4−, Cr2O72−, and p-nitrotoluene (4-NT), which is the first reported MOF-based sensor for detecting explosive 4-NT.
